Xuan Yi (Korean: 선의; Chinese: 宣仪) is a Chinese singer and actress under Yue Hua Entertainment. She is a former member of the girl group WJSN and the Chinese project girl group Rocket Girls 101.
As a soloist, she goes by the stage name Betty Wu. She made her Chinese solo debut on September 25, 2020 with the EP 25.
2015–2018: Debut with WJSN, Produce 101 China, Rocket Girls 101, controversy[]
She was revealed as a member of WJSN on December 17, 2015 as part of the group's Joy Unit.[1] The group officially debuted on February 25, 2016 with their first mini album Would You Like?.
On March 15, 2018, it was announced that Xuan Yi, alongside bandmate Mei Qi, would be contestants on the survival show Produce 101 China.[2] The girls ranked 2nd and 1st respectively, hence becoming members of Rocket Girls 101.[3] Starship Entertainment later clarified that Xuan Yi and Mei Qi would be simultaneously promoting with both WJSN and Rocket Girls 101.[4] Rocket Girls 101 officially debuted on June 23 with their first single "Collide".
On August 9, 2018, Yue Hua Entertainment released a statement revealing that Xuan Yi and Mei Qi would be withdrawing from Rocket Girls 101 due to contractual conflicts with Tencent. The girls were to resume their promotions with WJSN.[5] However, on August 17, it was revealed that Yue Hua Entertainment and Tencent had come to an agreement and the girls would rejoin Rocket Girls 101.[6]
On September 2, 2018, Starship Entertainment announced that Xuan Yi, along with Mei Qi and Cheng Xiao, would be unable to participate in WJSN's comeback with WJ Please? due to their conflicting schedules with Chinese promotions.[7]
As of July 2022, the three members have yet to return to promotions with WJSN.
2019–2020: Chinese solo debut, Rocket Girls 101's disbandment[]
Xuan Yi made her Chinese solo debut on August 13, 2019 with the her first digital single "Little Bird". With the release of the extended play 25, she has begun using the stage name Betty Wu for solo promotions.
Rocket Girls 101 disbanded on June 23, 2020 following the expiration of the members' contracts.
2023: Departure from WJSN[]
On March 3, Starship Entertainment announced that the contracts for members Xuan Yi, Cheng Xiao, and Mei Qi, which were shared with Yue Hua Entertainment in their participation with WJSN, had automatically concluded.[8]
