Wonho (원호) is a South Korean singer-songwriter, dancer and composer under Highline Entertainment. He is a former member of the boy group MONSTA X and the project group Y TEEN.

He made his solo debut on September 4, 2020 with part 1 of his first mini album Love Synonym #1 : Right for Me.[1]

Career

2014–2015: NO.MERCY, Monsta X

Wonho participated in the Mnet reality survival show NO.MERCY. In the last episode, he was chosen as one of the members of the new boy group of Starship Entertainment. As a result, he debuted with MONSTA X on May 15, 2015 with mini album Trespass.[2]

2019–2020: Departure from MONSTA X, investigation & verdict

On October 31, 2019, Starship announced his departure from MONSTA X as he wished to not cause trouble to the group following recent allegations surrounding him. The agency continued to take legal action against the malicious claims.[3] The following day, Starship announced they had terminated his contract with the agency.[4]

Following the announcement of Wonho's departure, there was a large outcry from fans who protested the decision in multiple ways, trending hashtags on Twitter for weeks and funding billboards and fan projects in various countries.[5][6] On March 10, 2020, Wonho was cleared of all charges by the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency and Starship announced that they would support his career in the future.[7]

2020: New agencies, "Losing You", debut mini album Love Synonym 1 : Right for Me

On April 10, Highline Entertainment, a subsidiary of Starship, announced that they had signed an exclusive contract with Wonho as a solo artist and a producer.[8] On May 6, it was announced that he signed with U.S. label Maverick Management.[9]

On June 29, Wonho announced his fandom will be called "WENEE".[10]

The single "Losing You" was pre-released on August 14. According to Wonho, the track is a love song but is also inspired by his love for his fans, who stayed by his side even after his departure from the group.[11]

The first part of his debut mini album, Love Synonym #1 : Right for Me, was released less than a month later, on September 4. It contains both uptempo and ballad tracks. Wonho participated in many tracks' songwriting and production, and the album carries a message that reflects his own feeling that with his fans, as long as they're together and keep going, they can overcome anything.[11]

2021: Love Synonym #2 : Right for Us, Japanese debut, Blue Letter

Love Synonym #2 : Right for Us, the second part of his first mini album, was released on February 26, 2021. He then made his debut in Japan with the digital single "Lose (Japanese Ver.)" on August 4.
