Why.. (stylized in all-caps) is the first EP by BOYNEXTDOOR. It was released on September 4, 2023 with "But Sometimes" serving as the album's title track.
The physical album comes in nine versions: Dazed, Moody, individual letter versions, and Weverse.
Background[]
On July 13, 2023, KOZ Entertainment confirmed that BOYNEXTDOOR is preparing for their first-ever comeback, aiming for a September release.[1] On August 7, it was announced that they will be releasing their first EP titled Why.. on September 4.[2]
Composition[]
Members Jaehyun, Taesan and Woonhak participated in the composition of the album's three new tracks, "Crying", "But Sometimes" and "ABCDLOVE" to express their feelings of youth honestly. Zico, CEO and founder of KOZ Entertainment, also participated in the composition of the title track "But Sometimes".[3]
"Crying" was described as a mid-tempo ballad that expresses the emptiness of a breakup after a deep first love with natural guitar touches, vintage drums, and droning keyboard sounds. Jaehyun, Taesan, and Woonhak participated in writing and composing the lyrics, drawing a delicate emotional line that leaves a deep and lasting impression.[4]
"But Sometimes" was described as a song with a powerful electric guitar sound at the beginning that attracts attention. The complex emotional rollercoaster experienced at the end of a first love that left only scars is expressed in direct lyrics. Jaehyun, Taesan, and Woonhak were listed in the lyrics and songwriting credits. The song is a harsh and honest portrayal of the confusing feelings of being hateful and angry but also wanting to keep watching.[4]
"ABCDLOVE" was described as a track that portrays how strange it still feels after a familiar love leaves, but with a joyful rhythm that expresses the hope that things will gradually get better. Jaehyun, Taesan, and Woonhak participated in composing and writing the lyrics. The witty rapping and soulful vocals atop the tranquil melody have been described as catchy.[4]

Promotion[]
To promote the album's launch, the group hosted the special "BOYNEXTDOOR 2Night," which was broadcast on Mnet and its digital channel M2.[6]
The group also performed the title track "But Sometimes" and the b-side "Crying" on multiple music shows. The group achieved its first win on a music show on September 12, 2023, on SBS M's "The Show".[7]
Commercial performance[]
According to YG PLUS, as of August 10, Why.. reached 323,746 stock pre-orders.[8]
Hanteo reported that Why.. sold 302,203 copies in its first day of release,[9] and 449,218 copies in its first week.[10]
As of September 5, Why.. reached #1 in 13 different countries on the iTunes Top Albums chart. “But Sometimes” reached #1 in 11 different countries on the iTunes Top Songs chart.[9]
Why.. debuted at #162 on the Billboard 200, making it the group's first release to ever enter the chart.[11]
