Umji (Korean: 엄지; Japanese: オムジ) is a South Korean singer-songwriter under BPM Entertainment. She is the maknae of the girl group VIVIZ and a former member of GFRIEND.

Career[]

2015: Debut with GFRIEND[]

She debuted as a member of GFRIEND on January 16, 2015 with the group's first mini album Season of Glass.

2021–present: Departure from Source Music, new agency and re-debut[]

On May 18, Source Music announced from that all members of GFRIEND, including Umji, have decided to not renew their contracts with the agency. They officially disbanded on May 22 after the end of their exclusive six-year contract.

On October 6, she announced on her personal Instagram that she will be joining BPM Entertainment with Eunha and SinB.[2] BPM Entertainment later confirmed that the three members have signed an exclusive contract with the agency and are planning to re-debut as a three-member group.[3][4] On October 8, it was revealed that the group name will be VIVIZ.[5] The group debuted on February 9, 2022 with the mini album Beam of Prism.[6]

On January 28, 2022, BPM Entertainment released a statement saying that Umji had been diagnosed with COVID-19. One of the staff members was in close contact, so Umji took a PCR test and tested positive. She will be in isolation and is only experiencing mild symptoms. The other members have tested negative, but BPM Entertainment will continuously conduct PCR tests during the isolation period.[7]

On February 6, BPM stated that she was no longer in quarantine after recovering from COVID-19.[8]

Trivia[]

  • The name Umji means "thumb" in Korean. And it is also the name of the protagonist's girlfriend in the South Korean comic Tteodoli Kkachi (떠돌이 까치).[10]
  • She forms a '98 liner friend group with the late ASTRO's Moon Bin, SEVENTEEN's Seungkwan, Lee Suji, HELLO GLOOM and fellow member SinB. The six have something in common: they really enjoy watching the romance-reality show Transit Love 2 and the Transit Love series in general. They also like vibing to popular K-Pop songs of the last decade.[11][12]
  • She has the same birth name as PRISTIN's Yehana, ILY:1's Nayu, and Jewelry's Yewon.
  • She comes from a very wealthy family: her father is a dentist and the CEO of a chain of dental clinics with several clinics spread across South Korea (in all there are 45 clinics, 9 of which are located in the capital of South Korea, Seoul).[13][14][15][16]
