The ReVe Festival 2022 - Birthday is the 10th (labeled as eighth) mini album by Red Velvet. It was released on November 28, 2022 with "Birthday" serving as the album's title track.
Background[]
On October 28, Star News reported that Red Velvet will be releasing an album at the end of November.[1] A couple hours later, SM put out a statement stating that Red Velvet are preparing an album with the aim for it to to be released late November.[2] On November 7, it was announced that Red Velvet will be releasing The ReVe Festival 2022 - Birthday on November 28.[3] Pre-orders for the Photobook and Cake version of the album started started later that day.[4] On November 14, a scheduler poster for the album was posted which revealed when photos/videos would be released.[5] Pe-orders for the digipack started on November 24.[6]
The ReVe Festival 2022 - Birthday is the second release of The ReVe Festival 2022 series and contains five songs including the title track, "Birthday".[7]
Composition[]
"Birthday" is described as a trap rhythm-based pop dance genre song which features rhythmical drums and refreshing synth sounds. The song samples "Rhapsody in Blue" by George Gershwin. Red Velvet's free-spirited vocals that are full of individuality will be heard throughout the song.[8] "Bye Bye" is described as an R&B pop dance genre song which features a groovy blend of refreshing strings and a dynamic bass. The lyrics talk about saying goodbye to a lover and promising them that they will not be swayed by their love any more. The song's charm are the nonchalant and chic vocals.[9] "On A Ride" is described as a hyper pop genre song. The lyrics talk about the excitement of having a crush on someone and comparing it to the feeling of being on a rollercoaster. The song gives off a fun feeling like you're at an amusement park.[9] "Zoom" is described as an R&B pop dance genre song. The song has a dramatic synth sound and an aggressive bass. The cool and charismatic vocals will create a strong immersion. The lyrics talk about the thrill of depicting evidence of a lover's lies.[10] "Celebrate" is described as a medium tempo R&B ballad genre song. The song has a soft melody and features a soft EP sound. The lyrics leaves a warm feeling about the yearning of being able to turn back time to be with the one you life forever.[10]
Promotions[]
Red Velvet held a Comeback Live through their YouTube channel and TikTok account on November 28 at 5pm. During the live, the girls gave an update on what they've been doing recently, introduced the new songs, shared behind the scenes stories, unboxed the album, and more.[11]
Red Velvet will be performing "Birthday" for the first time during their first music show appearance at Music Bank on December 2. The group will be also attending Show! Music Core and Inkigayo the following days.[12]
Commercial performance[]
As of November 28, The ReVe Festival 2022 - Birthday surpassed 712,187 pre-orders.[13]
As of 11am KST on November 30, The ReVe Festival 2022 - Birthday has reached #1 on the iTunes Top Albums chart in 47 different countries and QQ Music.[14]
Hanteo reported that The ReVe Festival 2022 - Birthday sold 439, 164 copies in its first day of release.[15] In its first week of release, the album sold 496,874 copies breaking the group's previous first week sales record which was The ReVe Festival 2022 - Feel My Rhythm with 443,922 copies sold.[16] For domestic album sales, the album ranked #1 on the weekly chart for Hanteo, Aladin, and Circle Chart.[17]
In the monthly update for December, Circle Chart reported that The ReVe Festival 2022 - Birthday reached 891,573 copies sold.[18] On January 12, 2023, the album received a triple platinum certification for surpassing 750,000 copies sold on Circle Chart.[19] On January 20, 2023, it reached 1,029,463 copies which makes it Red Velvet's first album to surpass 1 million copies sold.[20]
