"The Beginning: Cupid" is the first single album by FIFTY FIFTY. It was released on February 24, 2023 with "Cupid" serving as the single's title track.
The music video was pre-released on February 23, 2023.
The physical album comes in two versions: Nerd and Black.
Background[]
On January 25, 2023, FIFTY FIFTY revealed that they are currently preparing for their first comeback.[1] The comeback album was later revealed to be a single album titled "The Beginning: Cupid", set to be released on February 24.[2][3]
On April 27, 2023, it was announced that the title track "Cupid" would officially impact US Pop radio through Warner Records starting on May 9 following its viral success in the country.[4]
Composition[]
"Cupid" is a retro-style melody reminiscent of a chanson and a faint voice that signals the beginning of the song. In addition, based on minimal disco beats and funky baselines, the song guides the world with Cupid one step at a time through the harmony of subtle vocals and pads. The song shows a cheerful and humorous side through a refreshing synth and melodic piano melody. Sweet vocals show off their loveliness to the fullest, and the tapping rap part adds a rich taste to the song.[5]
"Cupid (Twin Version)", FIFTY FIFTY find themselves in a love situation as they think Cupid is a dumb lie, but they still wish for a lover. The song gives the listener the perfect Valentine’s feel with a taste of light dance-pop.[6]
Commercial performance[]
On March 27, 2023, Billboard announced that "Cupid" debuted at number 100 on the Hot 100 chart, making it their first-ever entry and the fastest K-pop group ever to enter the chart.[7] On April 4, "Cupid" peaked at #94 on its second consecutive week on the chart,[8] #85 on its third,[9], #60 on its fourth,[10] #50 on its fifth,[11] #41 on its sixth,[12] #19 on its seventh,[13] #17 on its eighth,[14] #18 on its ninth,[15] #20 on its tenth,[16] #23 on its 11th,[17] and #21 on its 12th,[18] and #24 on its 13th.[19] It spent 15 consecutive weeks and 25 weeks on the chart in total, making "Cupid" the longest and overall highest-ranking song by a female K-pop group in the chart history.[20][21] On May 8, "Cupid" peaked at #5 on the Global 200 and #6 on the Global Excl. U.S. charts,[22] and rose at #3 on the Global 200 and #2 on the Global Excl. U.S. charts the following week.[23] On May 22, "Cupid" topped the Global Excl. U.S. chart and ranked #2 on the Global 200.[24] On May 31, "Cupid" peaked at #25 on its third consecutive weeks on the Pop Airplay chart,[16] #18 on its fourth,[17] #16 on its fifth,[18] #14 on its sixth,[19] and peaked at #13,[20] and at #10 on its ninth consecutive week, making FIFTY FIFTY the first female K-pop group to enter the top 10.[25] "Cupid" spent 18 consecutive weeks on the chart.[21] Additionally, "Cupid" was listed as #7 on the Billboard's 2023 Global Song of the Summer.[26]
On March 30, Circle Chart reported that "The Beginning: Cupid" sold 14,069 copies during the week of March 19 to March 25. The album debuted at #11 on the weekly chart.[27]
On March 31, "Cupid" debuted at #96 on the United Kingdom's Official Singles Chart, making FIFTY FIFTY the fastest Korean girl group to enter the chart, less than five months after their debut.[28] It charted at #61 on its second consecutive week,[29] #34 on its third,[30] #26 on its fourth.[31] and #18 on its fifth,[32] #9 on its sixth,[33] and #8 on its seventh, making "Cupid" the first ever female K-pop group song to reach the top 10.[34] On May 19, "Cupid" dropped to #11 on its eighth consecutive weeks on the chart,[35] climbed back to #9 on its tenth,[36] #11 on its 11th,[37] and #16 on its 12th,[38] and 13th consecutive weeks.[39] It spent a total of 15 weeks on the chart, making it the longest-charting song by a female Korean group.[20]
As of May 17, "Cupid (Twin Ver.)" spent 36 consecutive day in the top 10 of the Spotify's Daily Global chart, reaching a new peak at #3. It is the longest run for a Korean girl group.[40]
On June 21, Billboard announced that "Cupid" took the #10 on their midyear roundup of "The 50 Best Songs of 2023 So Far" list.[41]
On December 1, American magazine Rolling Stone ranked "Cupid" #75 on their 'The 100 Best Songs of 2023' list.[42]
