SuPearls (수펄즈) was a cancelled girl group under YG Entertainment. The girl group was formed in 2011 and was highly anticipated as the next girl group to debut under YG after 2NE1; however, plans for the girl group were dropped in February 2013 after three of the four intended members terminated their contracts with the agency.
History[]
2011–2013[]
SuPearls initially was a performance team formed through the survival reality show K-pop Star 1 in which contestants Park Jimin, Lee Jungmi, Lee Michelle and Lee Seungju became a temporary four-member team. However, one of the judges, Yang Hyun Suk of YG Entertainment, saw potential within the group and conceived the idea of them possibly becoming a permanent girl group.[1][2]
Following the final episode of K-pop Star 1, the winner of the show, Park Jimin ultimately decided to sign with JYP Entertainment, thus leaving SuPearls. The remaining three members signed with YG Entertainment. The second place runner-up of K-pop Star 1, Lee Hi, also signed with YG Entertainment and was added her to SuPearls to replace Park Jimin.[1][2]
The following year in 2012, Lee Hi made a solo debut with "1,2,3,4" which became a charting single.[1][2]
Ultimately, Yang Hyun Suk decided to focus on promoting Lee Hi as a soloist due to her greater prospects in the music industry. In February 2013, it was reported that SuPearls had disbanded after training for three years, with YG Entertainment nullifying the contracts of Lee Jungmi, Lee Michelle and Lee Seungju.[1]
