Storm (스톰) was a five-member girl group under IBP Entertainment and Sony Music Entertainment Korea. They made their debut on May 28, 2007 with the studio album Stormy Kitty.
The group presumably disbanded sometime in late 2008.
History[]
Pre-debut[]
In August 2006, IBP Entertainment held an open audition to cast trainees for their upcoming girl group. Yelin, Dayoung, Jungmin, Junghee and Rani were among those who passed the three rounds of screening. After two months of unofficial testing, the five were selected to form the girl group Storm.[1]
2007-2008: Debut with Stormy Kitty, first music show appearance, Showvival, creation of DC Inside Gallery & controversy, comeback with "Stormy Kitty (Remix)" and disbandment[]
On April 12, 2007, it was reported that Storm would be debuting soon as a "female power dance group". In the same report, it was also announced that the group had just finished recording their first studio album. They trained 18 hours every day in preparation for their debut.[2]
On May 28, Storm debuted with the studio album Stormy Kitty with "Kitty" serving as the title track. The group reflected on having an easy-going and boyish style as much as possible to bring out their natural aura in order to have a different color than the existing girl groups at the time.[1]
Later on, the group also promoted the b-side "Blue" from their studio album by releasing a music video for it.[3] They debuted on stage on Mnet's M Countdown on August 27, notably a few months after their debut.
In September, Storm joined MBC's survival show Showvivial. The goal of the show was to "discover talent" among rookie newcomers and existing artists who were considered unpopular.[4][5] The winning team would be able to promote in Show! Music Core 5 weeks in row. Unfortunately, Storm left the program by episode 18.[6]
In October, Storm joined and created a gallery on the site DC Inside.[7] The opening of Storm's DC Inside gallery as rookie group was a shock to people as establishing one meant the artist reaching a level of recognition. It led to netizens mocking the group in the gallery.[8][9] This move as well as the poor management from their agencies have sparked concerns and criticisms from fans.[10]
On November 28, the group made their first comeback with the remix single "Stormy Kitty (Remix)" which they promoted until early 2008.[11]
Storm presumably disbanded sometime in late 2008 due to inactivity.
Aftermath[]
Following the disbandment of Storm, all the members went their separate ways:
- Rani became a model and actress, going by her birth name Park Ran. On February 23, 2009, she declared that she no longer wanted to be remembered as a singer but instead, she wanted to be known as an actress.[12] Since then, she has appeared in films such as Harmony (2010) and in dramas such as Miss Ajumma (SBS, 2011).
The circumstances of the other members are still unknown.
