SPICA (스피카; also stylized as Spica) was a five-member girl group under CJ E&M Music and B2M Entertainment. They debuted on February 9, 2012 with the mini-album Russian Roulette.

On February 6, 2017, CJ E&M announced the group's disbandment.

History[]

2012: Pre-debut, Debut with Russian Roulette, Painkiller, "I'll Be There" and "Lonely"[]

In early 2012, B2M Entertainment announced that they would debut a five-member girl group named SPICA.[1]

On January 9, 2012, the group released their pre-debut single "Doggedly", which sparked high interest as their labelmate Lee Hyori made an appearance in the music video.

On February 8, 2012, SPICA officially made their debut with their first mini-album Russian Roulette. However, the song's lyrics and choreography received backlash due to sensitive themes and were required to be changed.[2] As a result, SPICA debuted on music shows two days later than initially planned.

On March 29, 2012, SPICA released a repackage of their first mini-album titled Painkiller.

On September 19, 2012, SPICA made a comeback with their first digital single titled "I'll Be There".

Two months later, on November 21, 2012, the group released their second mini-album titled "Lonely".

2013-2014: "Tonight", "You Don't Love Me"; USA Debut, SPICA.S and "Ghost"[]

In 2013, the group appeared on the show Lee Hyori x Unnie, seeking Lee Hyori's help for their upcoming comeback. After their appearance on the show, Lee Hyori and her husband took charge of the production and collaborated closely with SPICA for their next two releases.[3]

On August 28, 2013, SPICA released "Tonight".

On January 27, 2014, the group released their third digital single: "You Don't Love Me"

In August 2014, SPICA partnered with Billboard to release their first English single, "I Did It". The single was released on the 7th and premiered at the Los Angeles KCON. Days later, it was announced in an interview that SPICA would release a full length American album.[4] However, plans fell through and the project remained unreleased.

On September 12, 2014, SPICA debuted their first sub-unit SPICA.S, consisting of Park Si Hyun, Park Na Rae, Yang Ji Won, and Kim Bo Hyung. Kim Boa was absent from the release as she pursued activities in acting and expressed her non preference sexy concepts[Citation Needed].

On November 5, 2014 it was released SPICA's first special single titled "Ghost".

2015: Solo activities[]

In 2015, SPICA members mainly focused on solo activities. The only group activity that SPICA did was the OST "Because of You" for the Super Daddy Yeol in March 2015.

In December 2015, the group signed with CJ E&M.[5]

2016: Girl Spirit, Comeback with "Secret Time"[]

In April 2016, it was announced that SPICA would make their comeback with a mini-album in April 2016.[6] However, for unknown reasons, the comeback was pushed back.

In July 2016, Bohyung joined the television show Girl Spirit, representing SPICA, and eventually won first place.

On August 25, 2016, SPICA made their comeback with their fourth digital single "Secret Time", following a previously delayed release.

2017: Disbandment[]

On February 6, 2017, CJ E&M announced that the group had disbanded as the members didn't renew their contract.[7]

Aftermath[]

  • Park Si Hyun is currently active as an actress[8].
  • Kim Bo A, along with Kim Bo Hyung, formed the duo KEEMBO in 2020. In 2023, she officially debuted as a soloist.
  • Park Na Rae retired from the industry and opened a coffee shop.
  • Yang Ji Won participated in the survival show The Unit and ranked 6th among all female contestants, subsequently becoming a member of UNI.T.[9]
  • Kim Bo Hyung resumed her solo activities in 2018. In 2020, she and Kim Bo A formed the duo KEEMBO. She made her Broadway debut in the musical "KPOP" in 2022[10]. On November 17, 2023, she joined the hip-hop group UpTown. [1][2]

  • Lee Hyori played a significant role in the selection and training of the members of SPICA, which lasted for approximately 1.6 years.[11]
  • Prior to joining SPICA, all members were active in the entertainment industry:
    • Park Si Hyun was a retired trainee. Before joining the group, she worked as an advertising model and office worker.[11]
    • Kim Bo A was a vocal couch and producer under DSP Media.
    • Park Na Rae appeared in Superstar K.
    • Yang Ji Won was set to debut under Five Girls[n 2], a cancelled girl group under Good Entertainment. She is also a former pre-debut member of T-ARA.
    • Park Bo Hyung used to train with 2NE1.
  • The group name means "the brightest star in the constellation of Virgo".[1]
