SNUPER (스누퍼) was a six-member boy group under WIDMAY Entertainment. They debuted on November 16, 2015 with their first mini album Shall We.

They disbanded on May 3, 2023 following the expiration of the members' contracts.[1]

The group name means "higher than super".[2]

History[]

Pre-debut[]

On March 12, 2015, SNUPER, the upcoming boy group from WIDMAY Entertainment set to debut in July, made their first appearance in the music industry with the release of "Hyde Jekyll", the OST for the SBS television drama Hyde Jekyll, Me. According to a representative from the OST production team, the song was originally created as a broadcast-only track with no plans for an official release. However, after the fourth episode aired, the song received positive attention from viewers and was officially released.[3]

On October 12, the agency released the first group teaser photo of SNUPER ahead of their debut in November.[4] The following day, Tae Woong and Sebin, who had been active as actors, were revealed as the rapper line of the group.[5] This was followed by the reveal of the main vocalist line, Sangil and Suhyun, on the 14th and the two remaining members, Sangho and Woosung, on the 15th.[6][7]

On October 23, WIDMAY Entertainment announced plans to reveal the title track, as well as other tracks from SNUPER's debut album, at their first fanmeeting at Lotte World Fresh Concert at 6 PM on the 25th.[8]

2015: Debut with Shall We[]

On November 16, 2015, SNUPER held a showcase to commemorate the release of their debut mini album Shall We, which was later released at midnight of that day.[2] The following day, they had their music show debut with their first performance on The Show.[9]

2016: "Polaroid", SNUPER Project, Platonic Love, "Compass", Japanese debut with "You=Heaven" and Rain of Mind[]

On January 14, 2016, the group returned with the digital single "Polaroid", a re-arranged winter version of their song of the same name from Shall We.[10] In promotion for the single, they held a contest where fans make a 30-second music video for the song, with the first place winner winning a trip to Phuket and various other prizes.[11]

On the 26th of the same month, SNUPER's first reality program SNUPER Project premiered its first episode.[12] The show was aired on MBC Music at 7PM every Friday, before ending on February 23.[13]

On March 8, the group made their comeback with the mini album Platonic Love.

On July 12, they released their first single album "Compass", with "You=Heaven" serving as the title track. This was followed by their Japanese debut single "You=Heaven" on October 26.

On November 15, they returned to the Korean music scene with their third mini album Rain of Mind, with "It's Raining" serving as the title track.

2017: First solo concert in Japan, "Oh Yeah!!", I Wanna?, The Star of Stars, The Unit, "Dear" and "Stand By Me"[]

On February 7, 2017, the group announced their first solo concert in Japan, titled SNUPER 1st Live Tour 2017 ~Spring Comes, Swing and Love~, touring around Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, and more.[14]

Ahead of their Japan concert tour, the group returned with their second Japanese single "Oh Yeah!!" on March 22. The single achieved moderate success, placing third and sixth on the weekly charts of Tower Records and Oricon.[15]

On April 24, they came back with their fourth mini album I Wanna?, with "Back:Hug" serving as the title track. This was followed by the release of the repackaged version, titled The Star of Stars, on July 20.

On September 6, WIDMAY Entertainment confirmed that some SNUPER members would be participating in KBS’s idol rebooting project The Unit.[16] During the audition round, only Suhyun, Sangil, and Sebin received the boot and passed, while Woosung was cut from the competition. However, they eventually got eliminated from the show, with Sebin leaving on the seventh episode at 46th place and Suhyun, Sangil leaving on the tenth episode, at 39th and 33rd place, respectively.

On November 17, the group released the special single album "Dear" to commemorate the group's 2nd anniversary.[17]

On December 13, they returned with their third Japanese single "Stand By Me".

2018: Blossom, "Natsu no Magic", You In My Eyes (SNUPER Special Edition)[]

On April 24, 2018, the group came back with their fifth mini album Blossom, with "Tulips" serving as the title track.

On August 22, they released their fourth Japanese single "Natsu no Magic".

on October 8, they released a special edition album, titled You In My Eyes (SNUPER Special Edition).

2019: "Weekend Secret", Sangho's hiatus, "Come Over" and Swing[]

In 2019, the group mainly focused on promoting in Japan. On January 30, they started off the year with their fifth Japanese single "Weekend Secret".

In May, Sangho was seemingly absent from the group's activities. Their agency confirmed on May 23 that he had been inactive from SNUPER's promotions due to health issues and would be returning in June.[18]

On August 14, they released their sixth Japanese single "Come Over".

On December 11, they released a Japanese best album, titled Swing. Aside from their previously released track, the album also included several new b-sides along with the title track "Big Air".

2020–2022: Enlistments, "Oxygen", Sebin's debut in OMEGA X and Sangil's signing with Mokoi Entertainment[]

Since 2020, the group became inactive, with little to no new activities due to the members' mandatory enlistments. On January 31, Suhyun was the first member to be announced to enlist in the military on February 3.[19] This was followed by the announcement that Sangil would be enlisting as an active duty soldier to the 12th division on July 20.[20]

On September 23, the group made their long-awaited comeback as five with their seventh Japanese single "Oxygen" without Suhyun, who was enlisting at the time.

On November 24, 2020, the agency announced that Sangho would be enlisting in the military on December 3.[21] Shortly after this, on January 12, 2021, Woosung was also announced to be enlisting for his mandatory military service on January 26.[22]

On March 26, 2021, Sebin was officially revealed as a member of the then-upcoming 11 members boy group OMEGA X, hinting his break from SNUPER.[23]

On September 7, 2022, it was reported that Sangil had signed an exclusive contract with Mokoi Entertainment and would be active as a trot singer.[24]

2023: Disbandment[]

On May 3, 2023, SNUPER announced their official disbandment after all six members' contracts with WIDMAY Entertainment came to an end.[1]

Aftermath[]

Following the group's disbandment, the members went their separate ways.

  • Sebin debuted as a member of OMEGA X on June 30, 2021 with their first mini album Vamos.
  • Sangil eventually departed from Mokoi Entertainment and started working as working as a night security guard while preparing for his return to the entertainment industry.[25]
    • In 2024, he participated in the survival show The Entertainer and made it to the top 15 before getting eliminated.
    • On February 20, 2025, he was announced as a new member of EPIC TRAVELS.[26] He had his first release with the group on April 15, with the digital single "Tab Tab".
  • Tae Woong returned to working as an actor.[27]
  • Woosung started working as a stage actor in Japan in 2024, under his real name Choi Seong Hyeok.[28]
  • Sangho debuted as a member of EPIC TRAVELS on December 3, 2024 with their first digital single "Closer".
  • Suhyun became active as a YouTuber under the name Keun, focusing on contents in Indonesian.[29] He also started working as a DJ, under the name Hiro.[30]
