SMASH (스매쉬; also stylized as SM☆SH) was a four-member boy group under TN Entertainment. Originally as six, they made their debut on August 19, 2008 with the mini album Open Fire!.

The group disbanded on March 31, 2015.[1]

History[]

Pre-debut[]

Prior to their debut, SMASH had been in preparation for three years under Tony An's agency TN Entertainment.[2]

  • Cheonwoo, Hanbang, Hero and Naru were selected through auditions held by TN Entertainment
  • World, former member of D.Bace, was selected through his long time friendship with Tony An.
  • Jerry was scouted by Tony An after asking for his autograph at a restaurant.

2008: Debut with Open Fire!, "White Night"[]

On August 19, 2008, SMASH made their debut with the mini album Open Fire!.

On December 5, they released their first digital single "White Night" as a Christmas gift for fans.

2009: Thailand promotions, first live show in Japan[]

In January 2009, SMASH held their first showcase in Thailand at the Xi'an Center in Bangkok, from the 2nd to the 6th. The event mobilized over 3,000 fans. In addition, they also promoted on Thailand's national broadcasting station, radio, and magazine.[3]

On April 29, the group held their first live event in Japan at Club Cheetah in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture.[4]

2010-2011: Cheonwoo's departure, Japanese debut with "Lunatic", "True Love", "Do it Do it!", "Bounce★Up", AIR SM☆SH 1, "STEP"[]

In April 2010, it was announced that the group would begin full-scale activities in Japan as five, subsequently confirming Cheonwoo's departure.[5]

On October 27, the group made their Japanese debut with the single album "Lunatic".

On January 26, 2011, they released their second Japanese single album "True Love". This was followed by the single albums "Do it Do it!" on April 27, "Bounce★Up" on August 3, their first studio album AIR SM☆SH 1 on August 24 and the single album "STEP" on November 2, 2011.

2012: Korean comebacks with "Get Your Swag On" and 지킬께[]

On March 2, 2012, they made their first Korean comeback in 2 years with "Get Your Swag On" in collaboration with Tony An, under the name Tony&SMASH.

On November 8, they released their second mini album 지킬께.

2014: World and Naru's departure, addition of Baram and June, Japanese comeback with "Kiminideaete", Jerry's departure[]

On February 4, 2014, it was announced that World would be leaving the group after their show on March 23 titled SM☆SH TOUR 2014 ~Eternal World.[6]

On March 7, it was announced that Naru would be absent from their schedule in Japan as his upcoming enlistment restricted him from leaving the country.[1] Later on September 9, Naru confirmed that he had left the group after their fanmeeting in Gyeongju in May.[7]

On August 23, Baram and June were officially introduced as new members at their live show titled SM☆SH Mini Live ~Introducing the new members and Mashing It Up~.[8]

On October 10, they made their first Japanese comeback in 3 years with the single album "Kiminideaete", which also included tracks with former members World and Naru.

On November 26, it was announced that Jerry would be graduating from the group after their show on December 10 due to personal reasons.[9]

2015: Disbandment, "Starlight"[]

On March 31, 2015, the group announced their disbandment.[1] In a letter by their director, it was revealed that he had discussed with the member last December and they decided to disband due to various reasons (age, military enlistment, personal reasons, etc).[10] Their director later released "Starlight" on April 13 as a goodbye gift for fans and a tribute to all eight members of SMASH.[11]

Aftermath[]

Following SMASH's disbandment, the members went their separate ways.

  • World became active as a flower tea sommelier, as well as a senior instructor and executive director of the Korean Flower Tea Association.[12]
  • Jerry got married on January 3, 2015 and started working as a real estate agent.[13][14]
  • Hanbang debuted as one half of the duo Jäger & Lucas on January 8, 2016. The duo presumably disbanded after he enlisted in the military on April 18, 2017.
  • Hero became active as an actor but appeared to have retired since 2017.
  • Naru started his own bakery cafe franchise 빠앙빠앙 in 2017 and has since opened 15 stores.[15]
  • June and Baram appear to have left the entertainment industry and focused on their personal lives.

  • World is a former member of D.Bace, under his real name Nam Hyun Jun.
  • Baram is a former member of DNT, under the stage name Min. He was also a contestant on The Last Audition of My Life, under the name Park Yu Min.
