Rover is the third mini album by Kai. It was released on March 13, 2023 with "Rover" serving as the album's title track.

The physical album comes in five versions: Photo Book Ver.1, Photo Book Ver. 2, Sleeve Ver., SMini, and digipack.

Background[]

On February 14, 2023, SPOTV News released a report stating that Kai will be releasing an album in March. Hours later, SM Entertainment confirmed the report and added that it will be released mid March.[1] On February 17, it was announced that Kai will be releasing his third mini album, Rover, on March 13, 2023.[2]

Composition[]

"Rover" is described as a rhythmic dance genre song. It features percussion, marimba, bells, and a heavy 808 bass.[3] "Black Mirror" is described as a hip-hop R&B genre song featuring a unique 808 bass and drum pattern, while "Bomba" is a dance genre song with rhythmic reggaeton beats and addictive synth riffs.[4]

Promotions[]

A countdown live for the album was held on EXO's YouTube channel and Tik Tok account on March 13 at 5pm.[5]

Kai will be performing "Rover" for the first time on March 17 at Music Bank. He will also be performing the song at Show! Music Core and Inkigayo on the following days.[6]

Commercial performance[]

Rover reached #1 on the iTunes Top Album chart in 40 different countries. It also topped daily domestic music charts such as Hanteo Chart and Circle Retail Album Chart, as well as China's QQ Music digital album sales chart.[7]

Circle reported that Rover sold 214,212 copies during the week of March 12 to March 18. It debuted at #1 on the weekly chart.[8]
