Rainbow had risen. Hello, We Are Rainbow!

—Rainbow

Rainbow (Korean: 레인보우, Japanese: レインボー) was a seven-member girl group under DSP Media. They released their debut mini-album Gossip Girl on November 12, 2009 and held their debut stage on MBC's Music Core on November 14.

On October 28, 2016, DSP announced the group's disbandment after the members decided to go their separate ways with their contracts ending on November 12, 2016.[1]

The group reunited in 2019 to celebrate their 10th anniversary.[2]

History[]

2009-2011: Debut with Gossip Girl, "A", "Mach", Japanese debut, So Girl[]

DSP Media teased all RAINBOW members before their official debut, with some gaining viral attention due to their backgrounds. On November 12, 2009, RAINBOW officially debuted with their first mini album "Gossip Girl".

On August 12, 2010, Rainbow made their first comeback with their first digital single "A".

Quickly it was released RAINBOW's second digital single "Mach", on October 10, 2010.

On April 7, 2011, Rainbow released their second EP, "So Girl".

On June 22, 2011, Rainbow released a repackaged version of their second EP.

On September 14, 2011, Rainbow officially debuted in Japan with the Japanese version of their first digital single, "A", which also included a Japanese version of their debut track Gossip Girl. Two months later, on December 7, they released the Japanese version of "Mach."

2012-2014: Rainbow Pixie, Rainbow Syndrome, Rainbow Blaxx[]

After a hiatus from group activities, on January 3, 2012, DSP Media announced that Rainbow would finally make a comeback, this time with a sub-unit. It was later revealed that the sub-unit would be named Rainbow Pixie, consisting of members Seungah, Jisook, and Hyunyoung.[citation needed] They debuted on January 12 of the same year with the digital single "Hoi Hoi".

On March 14, 2012, Rainbow released their third Japanese digital single, "Gonna Gonna Go!".

On May 4, 2012, they released their first Japanese album, Over The Rainbow.

On February 13, 2013, Rainbow released the first part of their Korean debut album, Rainbow Syndrome. The second part was released on June 4, 2013.

After wrapping up promotions for their debut album, Rainbow focused on individual activities, appearing on various variety shows and dramas. A year later, DSP Media announced another sub-unit for the group.[citation needed] This time, it was named Rainbow Blaxx and consisted of members Woori, Seungah, Jaekyung, and Hyunyoung. They officially debuted on January 20, 2014.

Despite being one of the most-viewed K-pop music videos of the year[3], the release was surrounded by controversy for being "too sexual" for South Korea. Unfortunately, this led to another hiatus for the group.

2015-2016: Innocent, Prism, disbandment[]

After a year-long hiatus, Rainbow returned with their third Korean mini album, "Innocent", released on February 23, 2015.

On February 15, 2016, they released their fourth Korean mini album, "Prism". During the summer of the same year, Rainbow released their photography album, Close Up, a collaboration with various photographers and RAINBOW. The album's release was entirely funded by their fans.[4]

On October 28, 2016, DSP Media announced Rainbow's disbandment after the members decided to go their separate ways following the expiration of their contracts on November 12, 2016.[1] Before their contracts ended, the group embarked on a farewell trip across Southeast Asia.[5]

2019: 10th anniversary reunion[]

In November 2019, on their tenth anniversary, Rainbow reunited and self-produced a special anniversary single titled "Over the Rainbow", which was released on November 14.
