Produce 48 (프로듀스 48) was a 2018 girl group survival show on Mnet. A sequel to Produce 101 and Produce 101 Season 2, it is a large-scale project in which the public "produces" a unit girl group by choosing members from a pool of 96 participants. Unlike the previous two seasons, the show invited trainees from both Korea and Japan to complete including members from the J-pop group AKB48 and its sister groups.
The show premiered on June 15, 2018 and aired every Friday at 23:00 (11:00 p.m.) KST.
Background[]
Rumors of a third season began on November 8, 2017 after news outlet OSEN published an exclusive report of the show's return, also indicating that they would be collaborating with Japanese girl group AKB48. Mnet denied the report stating the contents of the article were groundless.[1]
Mnet eventually confirmed the upcoming third season at the 2017 Mnet Asian Music Awards in Japan on November 29, following a collaboration stage performance with AKB48, Chungha, PRISTIN, Weki Meki, fromis_9, and Idol School Class 1.[2]
Contestants moved into dorms specially for the show on April 11 and spent a week there training and recording their audition performances.[3]
The show was originally intended to have 48 Korean trainees and 48 Japanese trainees, however, the final contestant lineup consisted of 57 Korean trainees and 39 Japanese trainees. This was because some Japanese idols withdrew from the program due to their work schedules and hence could not compete in the show.[citation needed]

- The final twelve officially debuted in the group called IZ*ONE on October 29, 2018.
- The group promoted for two and a half years, with the option to renew.[4][5] The group disbanded on April 29, 2021.
- Honda Hitomi (9th) returned to AKB48's Team B and Team 8. She announced her graduation from AKB48, to be held on January 26, 2024.
- Miyawaki Sakura (2nd) graduated from HKT48 on June 19, 2021. She signed with Source Music on March 14, 2022, and debuted in their new girl group LE SSERAFIM on May 2, 2022 with the mini album, Fearless.
- Yabuki Nako (6th) returned to HKT48. She graduated from the group, on April 1, 2023, and is now continuing her activities as an actress.
- Kwon Eun Bi (7th) debuted as a soloist on August 24, 2021 with the mini album, Open. The song earned her a nomination for best new female artist at the 2021 MAMAs.

Trivia[]
- Despite having artists from both Japanese and South Korean groups, including some Chinese trainees, only Koreans were allowed to vote for the show.
- The airing of the finale was extremely logistically challenging, as minors in South Korea are not permitted to appear on live broadcasts after 10pm.
- The show actually got more popular as it went on. The first episode was its lowest rated episode, while the finale was its highest rated episode.
- During an investigation held after the show's following season, Produce X 101, it was discovered that the placements of the final 20 contestants were manipulated. Trainees Han Cho Won and Lee Ga Eun were found to have been rigged out of the final lineup, placing 6th and 8th respectively. The names of the IZ*ONE members rigged into the lineup in their place were not revealed, as lawyers felt it may endanger their lives and careers.
- At the 2021 MAMAs, 3 of the 5 acts nominated for Best New Female Artist (casually known as Rookie of the Year) consisted at least in part of former Produce 48 contestants and IZ*ONE members (Lightsum's Han Cho Won, Lee Yu Jeong, and Kim Na Young, soloist Jo Yu Ri and soloist Kwon Eun Bi). Former contestants made up 6 of the total 22 people in the category.
