ONF (온앤오프) is a six-member boy group under WM Entertainment. Originally as seven, they debuted on August 2, 2017 with their first mini album On/Off.
History[]
Pre-debut[]
On May 26, 2017, WM Entertainment announced that they would be debuting a new boy group, tentatively known as WM Boys. The brother group of B1A4 and OH MY GIRL, it was subsequently announced that the seven-member group would be debuting during the summer.[2]
On July 7, after performing the song "Original", the group members introduced themselves in their first V Live broadcast and announced that they would make their debut in the beginning of August.[3]
On July 13, it was revealed that WM Boys' official name would be ONF.[4]
2017: Debut with On/Off, MIXNINE[]
ONF officially debuted August 2, 2017 with their first mini album On/Off.
On October 1, all seven members of the group were announced to be participating on YG Entertainment's newest survival show MIXNINE.[5] Only Hyojin and Laun made it to the final lineup after ranking 2nd and 7th place, respectively, but after much discussion, it was decided the MIXNINE group would not debut.[6]
2018: You Complete Me, Japanese debut[]
On May 15, 2018, it was reported that the group would be making their first-ever comeback on June 7, which is their first comeback since their participation on MIXNINE.[7]
On June 3, ONF announced that their official fanclub name would be known as FUSE.[1]
ONF made their first-ever comeback with the release of their second mini album You Complete Me on June 7, 2018.[8]
On June 15, after signing a contract with the large Japanese record label Victor Entertainment, it was confirmed that the group would be making its Japanese debut in August.[9] On August 1, the group released their first Japanese single "On/Off -Japanese Ver.-".
On September 26, ONF released their second Japanese single "Complete -Japanese Ver.-".
2019: We Must Love, Laun's departure, Go Live[]
The group made their first comeback in 7 months on February 7, 2019 by releasing their third mini album We Must Love.[10]
On August 23, 2019, it was announced that Laun had halted all activities in the entertainment industry due to personal reasons. Subsequently, it was also revealed the same day that he had officially left ONF and WM Entertainment simultaneously after deciding to terminate his exclusive contract.[11]
ONF made their comeback as six with their fourth mini album Go Live on October 7.[12]
On November 1, the group shared their challenges about working as idols, and not long afterward, they revealed that they were in preparations for a comeback in the near future.[13]
2020: Road to Kingdom, Spin Off[]
On March 5, 2020, ONF were announced as one of the seven groups that would be participating in Road to Kingdom.[14] The show began airing April 30[15] and ended on June 19.[16]
ONF released their fifth mini album Spin Off on August 10.[17] That same day, WM released a statement on the group's fancafe following excessive violations of their privacy.[18]
On December 24, 2020, the group revealed the design of their lightstick.[19]
2021: ONF:My Name, City of ONF, Popping, Goosebumps, military service[]
On February 24, 2021, their first full length album, ONF:My Name, was released.[20] The title track of the album, "Beautiful Beautiful", gave the group their first-ever music show win since their debut on The Show on March 2.[21][22] The repackage edition, City of ONF, was released on April 28.[23]
On July 14, WM Entertainment confirmed that ONF would be making a comeback in August to celebrate their 4-year anniversary since debut.[24] The group returned with their special summer popup album Popping on August 9.[25]
On November 2, the group's leaders Hyojin and Seungjun announced that all members of the group, with the only exception being the youngest member U, who is Japanese, would be enlisting in December to minimize their hiatus.[26] On November 9, it was announced that ONF would be making a comeback ahead of their military service.[27] They released their sixth mini album Goosebumps on December 3.[28]
After their comeback, all five Korean members enlisted as active duty soldiers on December 21, December 27 and December 28.[29][30]
2022–2023: Storage of ONF, military discharges, Love Effect[]
On August 3, they announced their special album Storage of ONF, set for release on August 16.[31]
All five Korean members were discharged in June 2023: Minkyun on June 20,[32] followed by Wyatt and Seungjun on June 26,[33] and Hyojin and E-Tion on June 27.[34]
On September 8, Newsen reported that ONF would be making their comeback with a new album on October 4.[35] WM Entertainment confirmed the news the same day.[36] On September 12, ONF announced they would be releasing their seventh mini album Love Effect on October 4.[37]
On November 8, ONF released a special Japanese single "Love Effect (Japanese Version)".[38]
2024: Stage name changes, Beautiful Shadow[]
On January 1, 2024, WM Entertainment announced that members J-Us and MK will henceforth promote using their birth names Seungjun and Minkyun respectively.[39]
On March 12, ONF released a teaser announcing they would be making their comeback with their eighth mini album Beautiful Shadow on April 8.[40]
