NewJeans (뉴진스) is a five-member girl group under ADOR. They debuted on July 22, 2022, with the lead single "Attention", prior to the release of their debut EP New Jeans on August 1, 2022.
Their name alludes to the idea that jeans are a timeless fashion item and the group's intention to carve a timeless image for themselves.[2] It is also a word play on the phrase "New Genes", referring to them ushering a new generation of pop music.[3]
History
2019–2022: Pre-debut
On July 1, 2019, Big Hit Entertainment announced that Min Hee Jin would join the company as their new CBO (Chief Brand Officer).[4] At the time, it was also revealed that she would be the creative lead in multiple girl groups, excluding Big Hit, and that a separate label would also be established later, where she would be a producer.[5]
On September 4, 2019, in collaboration with Big Hit and Source Music, it was announced the Plus Global Auditions,[6] were held in 16 cities and lasted until the end of October.[7] By the end of 2019, casting had been completed and training began at the beginning of 2020.[8] By September 2021, the girl group's management was transferred to ADOR.[9]
On November 21, 2021, HYBE officially announced the launch of a new independent label, ADOR, under the agency.[10] The label planned to launch a new girl group in 2022 and would mainly be produced by the label's CEO, Min Hee Jin, and primarily consist of members recruited during HYBE's Plus Global Audition in 2019.[11]
A second round of global auditions were held between December 2021 and January 2022.[12] On March 3, 2022, Min Hee Jin revealed that the girl group's debut would be in the third quarter of the year.[13]
2022: Debut with New Jeans, fandom name

On July 1, 2022, the first teaser videos were released and it was announced that the group would release their first content on the 22nd.[14] On July 22, the group released the debut music video for their lead single "Attention" and the debut schedule for their first EP, New Jeans, which would contain four songs including two additional singles.[15] Teaser photos were released that same day.[16]
The music videos for "Hype Boy" and "Hurt" were released on July 23 and July 25, respectively. On July 28, ADOR announced that as of July 27, New Jeans had surpassed 444,000 stock pre-orders, the highest number achieved by any girl group debut album in history.[17]
On August 1, the group's debut EP was released digitally, along with the music video for "Cookie".[18] NewJeans then held their debut stage on the August 4 broadcast of Mnet's M! Countdown, performing three of their tracks, "Attention", "Hype Boy", and "Cookie".[19] On August 18, the group took their first-ever music show win on the August 18 broadcast of M! Countdown.[20]
On October 29, 2022, coinciding with 100th day since its debut, NewJeans announced their official light stick and that the fandom name would be "Bunnies" or "Tokki", referenced in the group's albums artworks.[21]
2023: First comeback with "OMG", "Zero", "New Jeans", "Super Shy", Get Up, "Gods", NJWMX
On October 18, 2022, ADOR announced that NewJeans was preparing for their first-ever comeback.[22] A month later, on November 10, it was announced that the group would release their first single album, "OMG", on January 2, 2023.[23] On December 19, "Ditto" was pre-released.[24] "OMG" passed the first-week sales of their first EP in just one day and sold more than one million copies in less than a month after its release.[25]
On March 31, ADOR announced that NewJeans would be releasing the promotional single "Zero" as part of Coca-Cola's Korean campain on April 3.[26]
On April 4, in an exclusive Star News reported that NewJeans would release a pre-release single in June and an album in July. Hours later, ADOR responded to the reports and stated that the group was preparing for a comeback, but the date has yet to be set.[27]

On May 23, News1 reported that NewJeans would be releasing a pre-release single on July 7 and an album later that month.[28] Hours later, ADOR confirmed the reports.[29] On June 18, it was announced via the group's Twitter account that their second EP, Get Up, would be released on July 21. The songs "New Jeans" and "Super Shy" was pre-released on July 7.[30][31]
On August 24, Netflix announced that NewJeans would release a remake of the 1996 song by Kim Jong Seo, "Beautiful Restriction", as part of the soundtrack for their upcoming drama A Time Called You, where the song was released on September 1.[32]
On September 27, it was announced that the group would be releasing "Gods", the theme song for the 2023 League of Legends World Championship, on October 4.[33]
On December 15, it was announced that NewJeans would be releasing the remix album NJWMX on December 19.[34]
2024: "Bubble Gum", Hyein's hiatus and return, "How Sweet", "Right Now", "Supernatural", conflict with ADOR

On March 26, 2024, NewJeans announced that they would pre-release "Bubble Gum" as a commercial song in April before releasing "How Sweet" on May 24. "Right Now" was pre-released on June 17 as a commercial song. NewJeans planned to release a new album in the second half of 2024 and start a world tour in 2025.[35] As the group has since been in conflict with their agency, these plans have been delayed as a result.
On April 10, ADOR announced that Hyein would be taking a break from activities due to a microfracture in her foot.[36]

On May 10, NewJeans announced that they will debut in Japan with a single "Supernatural" on June 21.[37]
On May 14, it was announced that NewJeans participated in the British Museum audio guide in Korean, including explanations on Korean and Roman Britain artefacts.[38]
On June 20, ADOR announced that Hyein would partially resume activities starting with the group's Japanese fanmeeting.[39]
On November 13, all five NewJeans members sent a certification of contents to ADOR asking them to rectify all significant breaches of the exclusive contracts within 14 days from the receipt of this letter. Although no specific demands have been disclosed, ADOR simply stated that they would do their best to resolve the matter wisely.[40]
On November 28, it was announced that NewJeans would hold a press conference at 8:30 p.m. to address the termination of their exclusive contracts.[41] During the press conference, they explained that ADOR does not have the will or ability to protect the group, hence they have agreed to leave the agency as of November 29.[42] ADOR responded that, as they have not violated the contracts, it does not constitute grounds for termination. Therefore, ADOR expected NewJeans to continue their scheduled activities ahead together with ADOR.[43]
On November 29, NewJeans' media representative released the response from ADOR to the certification of contents sent by the group.[44] NewJeans later released an official statement announcing that all five members had terminated their contracts with ADOR.[45]
On December 3, ADOR announced they filed a lawsuit with the Seoul Central District Court to confirm the validity of their contracts with NewJeans.[46] The members later responded that they already returned profits exceeding investment to ADOR and HYBE and claiming that the agencies had repeatedly violated contract terms, failed to fulfill their duty to protect their artists, as well as spreading malicious contents and defamation.[47]
On December 14, the group's members opened an independent Instagram account.[48]
2025: Further dispute with ADOR and HYBE, Brief name change, and members return to ADOR
On January 23, 2025, the members announced they appointed law firm Shin & Kim as their legal representatives. They further claimed that ADOR and HYBE are at the center of criticism that spread through YouTube channels and have the intention of abandoning and replacing the group. Additionally, they allegedly tried to persuade or sow discord among them with underhanded tactics to defame, divide, and manipulate them through false information and media play. Through their independent Instagram account, they asked for suggestions of group name to use temporarily.[49]
The first hearing over the validity of the members' exclusive contracts will take place on April 3.[50]
On February 6, 2025, it was announced through the press that NewJeans would be rebranded to NJZ along with new profile photos. The group will be headlining ComplexCon Hong Kong in March 2025, and will unveil a new song at the event.[51] ADOR later stated that they regret "this unilateral decision [made by the members] before any legal ruling has been made regarding the validity of their exclusive contracts".[52] In an additional statement, ADOR emphasized that the official group name of NJZ is still NewJeans as the exclusive contract is still valid and its termination is one-sided.[53]
On February 27, the members launched additional SNS accounts under the name NJZ.[54] On March 1, the group released a teaser through their Instagram, hinting at their upcoming release.[55] On March 18, it was revealed that the five members had applied for the "NJZ" trademark in 10 sectors, including logos, advertising and merchandise sales, the day before their new name announcement.[56]
On March 21, the Seoul Central District Court ruled in favor of ADOR to prohibit NewJeans members from engaging in independent activities under the name NJZ while awaiting the result of the main lawsuit about the validity of the contract termination.[57] ADOR later stated that they will fulfill their responsibilities in supporting the artists moving forward starting with the upcoming ComplexCon. The members responded that they believe the court did not sufficiently take into account the fact that the members' trust in ADOR has been completely destroyed due to unfair treatment and discrimination. They plan to dispute additional issues and will provide explanatory materials as they claim an asymmetry of information between ADOR, HYBE and NJZ, to contest the decision.[58]
The group went on to perform at the ComplexCon under the name NJZ and showcasted their new song "Pit Stop". During the performance, they announced that they will be going on hiatus out of respect for the court's decision.[59] ADOR later stated that the members pushed ahead with performing under their new name despite the court's decision and unilaterally announced that they would be halting their activities. They also asked to meet the members to discuss their future.[60] On April 5, all posts on social media accounts under the name "NJZ" were deleted, and he social media accounts were also renamed to be their initials spelled out in age order (MHDHH).[61]
On April 9, the Seoul Central District Court's Civil Agreement Division 50 held a private hearing regarding NewJeans' objection to the injunction prohibiting them from engaging in independent activities without ADOR's approval. The court would announce its final decision at a later date.[62] On April 16, the court upheld the original decision for the injunction, with the group immediately appealing the decision to the Seoul High Court.[63] On June 17, the Seoul High Court ultimately decided to reject the appeal.[64]
On August 10th, fans noticed that ADOR updated their website to auditions for an upcoming boy group and that they deleted everything related to NewJeans from their website.[65] However, the group's own webpage, https://newjeans.kr, remained active.[66]
On October 30, the Seoul Central District Court ruled in favor of ADOR, confirming that the exclusive contracts with the five members are valid. Following the decision, the NewJeans members' legal representative announced that they will appeal the court ruling.[67] ADOR welcomed the court's decision and reaffirmed their role as NewJeans' management agency, stating they have completed preparations for future activities including the release of a full-length album.[68]
On November 12, ADOR announced that Haerin and Hyein would return to the agency for activities. The remaining members, Minji, Hanni, and Danielle, told a local news outlet that they also intend to return.[69] It was also reported that one member is currently in Antarctica, which has delayed communication, however there has been no official response from ADOR as of yet concerning their return.[70]
