Nazca (나스카) was a six-member girl group under Nazca Entertainment. They debuted on March 1, 2001 with the self-titled studio album, Nazca.

On April 29, 2003, it was announced that the group had disbanded due to the agency's financial issues.[1]

The group was taken from the Nazca civilization in Peru, meaning that they will inherit the spirit of the mysterious Nazca civilization and realize true communication between the online and offline world.[2][3]

History[]

Pre-debut[]

Prior to their debut, Nazca had been planned and developed for three years by Nazca Entertainment's CEO Lee Eunjo:[4]

  • In 1999, Junghee joined the agency and became the first member of Nazca.[3]
  • Oli and Rei auditioned through an acquaintance’s introduction.[3]
  • Minkyung and Jiyoun auditioned after getting street cast by the agency. Minkyung was cast during a school festival in her third year of high school, while Jiyoun was a college student majoring in cello.[3]

In August 2000, the five members were gathered together and began recording their debut album.[3]

In February 2001, it was announced Nazca would be making their debut as six, with the previously mentioned members and cyber singer Nazca, with the concept of "cute witches".[5] The group planned to promote as five in real life and six in the online world with their cyber member.[6]

2001: Debut with Nazca[]

On March 1, 2001, the group debuted with the self-titled studio album Nazca, with "Bonaccia" serving as the title track which was later included in Andamiro's rhythm game Pump It Up Perfect Collection.[7][8]

On April 5, it was reported that internet broadcasting company Crezio, best known for its online game and 3D technology development, had formed a partnership with Nazca to distribute their music online.[9]

Following the promotions for their debut, the group became inactive.

2003: Disbandment[]

On April 29, 2003, Nazca Entertainment's CEO revealed that the company almost went bankrupt as the production for Nazca cost too much money. The financial situation also got worse after their former CEO passed away. With this, they decided to ultimately disband, with the members going their separate ways.[10]

Trivia[]

  • The group was originally planned to be debuted as a duo with one real member and cyber member Nazca.[10]
  • They are the first girl group to have a cyber member and promote both online and offline.[11]
  • The group was initially planned to expand to all areas of digital entertainment, including character goods, a movie that combines live-action and animation featuring cyber member Nazca and a video game based on their debut album, etc.[4]
  • Rei was the vocal provider for cyber member Nazca.[5]
  • The music video for "Bonaccia" was banned from public broadcasting for being too provocative. The agency initially considered refilming it but decided not to as motion capture was too expensive.[4]
  • On March 22, 2001, a man in his late 20s tried to jump on stage during their performance on Music Bank but was luckily stopped by a staff member. This happened again on the 24th, as the same man pretended to be a staff member, jumped on stage and ran towards the members during their performance at Keimyung University in Daegu. As a result, the agency had to assign personal managers to each of the five members.[12]
  • Another agency offered to buy Nazca but was rejected, as Nazca Entertainment's CEO thought they weren't reliable.[10]
