miss A (미쓰에이) was a Korean-Chinese four-member girl group under JYP Entertainment. They debuted on July 1, 2010 with their first single album "Bad But Good".
On December 27, 2017, their agency announced that the group had disbanded.[1]
History[]
Pre-debut[]
In early 2010, miss A originally consisted of five JYP Entertainment trainees. They first appeared in Chinese variety shows performing dance routines and songs as the "Chinese Wonder Girls," with Woo Hyerim as a member, who was placed in Wonder Girls soon before miss A's debut in order to replace Sunmi.[2] In March of the same year, fifteen-year-old trainee Bae Suzy joined the group which, then a trio became known as 'Miss A'.[3] The group signed with the Samsung Electronics group in China and released a song used for the commercial called "Love Again" for the Samsung Beat Festival.[4] Lee Min Young, a solo artist and a long-time trainee in America, also made a cameo appearance in the music video, and joined the group for their South Korean debut in a month later.
2010-2011: Debut with "Bad Girl Good Girl", A Class, Chinese debut[]
miss A made their debut as a four-member group with the release the single album "Bad But Good". The group then received first place on KBS Music Bank, becoming the fastest girl group to take the #1 spot on a music show at the time. They also consequently got first place program Inkigayo from the SBS. On August 1, 2010, miss A received their first "Mutizen" award on Mnet's M Countdown. The song stayed as the number 1 song for four consecutive weeks, breaking the previous record set by Girls' Generation.
On September 26, 2010, miss A made their first-ever comeback with their second single album "Step Up". The song "Breathe" was used as the main promotional title track of the single. The group first performed the song on October 7 and they won first place by the end of the month.
In May 2011, miss A released "Love Alone", a single from their then-upcoming album A Class. "Love Alone" was used as a promotional song for Yuna Kim's ice show, and miss A performed the song at the opening of "All That Skate Spring 2011". A month later, the group announced their comeback with their first full-length album called A Class, which was released digitally on July 18, 2011. A Class consists of a mix of previously released hits and four new tracks, including the title track "Good Bye Baby". The song was first performed on the July 21 broadcast of Mnet's M Countdown. The group continued their promotions on various South Korean music programs, including KBS's Music Bank, MBC's Show! Music Core and SBS's Inkigayo. The following week, they won all awards from the shows.
On September 30, 2011, miss A made their Chinese debut with the release of a special edition of their first full album, containing a DVD with music videos, as well as Chinese versions of the hit songs from the album ("Bad Girl Good Girl", "Breathe", "Good Bye Baby" and "Love Again"). After the Chinese album release, it ranked #3 on Taiwan's G-Music Chart.[5]
2012: Touch, Independent Women Part III[]
miss A started 2012 by announcing their comeback with their first mini album Touch. The album was released on February 20, while the title track's accompanying music video was uploaded a day earlier. The song and the album peaked at #2 on Gaon Chart Digital Singles and Physical Albums rankings for the 4th week of February. On February 23, the group began their promotions for their new album on music shows, and was promoted between February and March 2012.
On March 23, miss A released a Chinese version of the Touch album in Hong Kong and Taiwan. This album contains both the Korean and Chinese version of "Touch" and also the music videos under the DVD version. After the release, "Touch" immediately topped Chinese online charts.[6]
The group wrapped up their promotions for the album by performing "Over U", another song from the album, on each music program during their last week of promotions.
On October 15, 2012, miss A released their second mini album, Independent Women Part III. The following day, the group members were taken to a hospital after being involved in a minor car accident. On October 18, the group began promoting the title track "I Don't Need A Man".
2013-2015: Hush, Colors[]
On November 6, 2013, miss A released their second full-length album Hush. The album includes the previously released song "I Don't Need A Man", while the title track by the same name was used to promote the album.
miss A announced their first new comeback in over a year with their third mini album Colors (miss A), which was released on March 30, 2015. The song "Only You" was used as the main promotional title track, as the album was promoted throughout April of the same year. Following the end of the album promotions, miss A went on an indefinite hiatus.
2016-2017: Members' departure from JYP, disbandment[]
On May 20, 2016, JYP Entertainment announced that member Jia would be leaving both the group and the agency after deciding not to renew her contract.[7] The same day, the agency released a statement regarding the group's status and future activites. Only Jia left miss A, although the group would not disband, as the members were focusing on solo activities at the time.[8]
On April 7, 2017, a statement was released by JYP Entertainment announcing that Min's contract would also be ending by the end of the month, as she is currently in discussions for a renewal.[9] On August 1, Suzy renewed her exclusive contract with JYPE.[10]
On November 9, 2017, it was announced that Min would be leaving both miss A and JYPE after her contract expired the same day and decided not to renew.[11] On December 27, JYP Entertainment announced the group's disbandment after 7 years of activities.[1]
Aftermath[]
- Following the end of miss A's activities, Fei left JYPE in 2018 and has since been pursuing activities as a solo artist and actress.
- Since leaving miss A in May 2016, Jia is currently pursuing her solo endeavors in China.
- Min made her solo debut on November 8, 2021 with the digital single "Onion".
- Suzy left JYPE on March 26, 2019, after deciding not to renew her contract. On April 8, she signed with Management SOOP.
