LOONA (이달의 소녀; stylized as LOOΠΔ) is a girl group formed by BlockBerryCreative.
From October 2016 to June 2018, each member of the group was revealed, along with a solo single album and a music video, with sub-units being introduced as members were revealed. LOONA currently has eleven inactive members, along with three subunits.
Originally with 12 members, the group held their debut concert "LOONAbirth" on August 19, 2018, followed by the release of their debut mini album [+ +] the next day.[1][2]
History[]
2016: HeeJin, HyunJin, and HaSeul[]
On September 26, 2016, the first teaser of member HeeJin was released across multiple social media platforms including Youtube, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. Teasers for "HeeJin" were released until October 5, when the music video for "ViViD" was released.
On October 28, the second member, HyunJin was revealed in a similar manner. Teasers for "HyunJin" included HeeJin for their duet titled "I'll Be There" and solo teasers for HyunJin were released for her song "Around You". Her solo album, "HyunJin" was released on November 17.
On December 8, more than a month later, member HaSeul continued the pattern by having teasers of her and her two fellow members. Her solo album, "HaSeul" was released on December 15, including her solo "Let Me In" and a Christmas themed trio named "The Carol".
2017: YeoJin, ViVi, Kim Lip, international popularity, JinSoul, Choerry, Yves, Chuu, LOONA 1/3, ODD EYE CIRCLE, and MIXNINE[]
On January 4, YeoJin was revealed as the fourth member. Her solo album, "YeoJin" was released on January 16, including her solo song "Kiss Later", HeeJin and HyunJin's duet "My Sunday", and HaSeul and YeoJin's duet "My Melody".
On February 14, ViVi was revealed as the fifth member.
It was revealed that LOONA will be in sub-units. LOONA's first sub-unit, LOONA 1/3, contains members, HeeJin, HyunJin, HaSeul, and ViVi. Their mini album, Love & Live, was released on March 13. Along with them were LOONA's first TV promotions exclusively on SBS' Inkigayo.
On April 5, ViVi was confirmed as the "April Girl". Her single, "ViVi" was released on April 17, including "Everyday I Love You," featuring HaSeul and "Everyday I Need You," featuring future member JinSoul. On April 23, LOONA 1/3's repackaged mini-album, Love & Evil, was revealed with teasers of the members and a teaser for "Love & Evil". Love & Evil was then released on April 27 with a single live stage on Inkigayo.
On May 15, Kim Lip was revealed as the sixth member. Her single "Kim Lip" was released on May 23, with her solos "Eclipse" and "Twilight".
During this time, the group began to gain a substantial international following. They remained less popular domestically, though their overall popularity increased as more members were announced.
On June 13, JinSoul was revealed as the seventh member. Her single "JinSoul" was released on June 26, including her solo "Singing in the Rain" and JinSoul and Kim Lip's duet "Love Letter".
On July 7, LOONA 1/3's "Rain51db" music video was released. On July 10, a special music video for JinSoul's "Singing in the Rain" was released featuring member Heejin exclusively on V Live. On July 12, Choerry was revealed as the eighth member. On July 28, "Choerry" was released, featuring Choerry's solo, "Love Cherry Motion", and a duet with fellow member JinSoul, "Puzzle".
On August 30, BlockBerryCreative revealed a teaser for the second sub-unit of LOONA, ODD EYE CIRCLE, which contains members Kim Lip, JinSoul, and Choerry. On September 19, the preview teaser for the lead single of their debut mini album was released. The day after, the album was revealed in a preview as Mix & Match. The album was released on September 21 along with a music video release for the lead single, "Girl Front". The subunit made their live debut on M Countdown and then Inkigayo. During this time, members HeeJin, HyunJin, and HaSeul were announced to participate in the idol survival show MIXNINE.
On October 18, it was announced that a repackage album titled Max & Match would be released. On October 23, the promised "Loonatic (English Version)" was released across international platforms. On October 31, Max & Match was released along with a music video for the title track, "Sweet Crazy Love".
On November 14, Yves was revealed as the ninth member. On November 28, "Yves" was released with her solo title track "new" and b-side "D-1".
On December 13, "The Carol 2.0" was released featuring ViVi, Choerry, and Yves under the transverse unit "ViRryVes" (pronounced as believe). A day later, Chuu was revealed as the tenth member. On December 28, "Chuu" was released including her solo "Heart Attack" and Yves and Chuu's duet "Girl's Talk".
2018: Go Won, Olivia Hye, promotional events, yyxy, fandom name, LOONAbirth, and official group debut with [+ +][]
On January 15, Go Won was revealed as the eleventh member. Two days later, the first ever official fan event was announced to be held on February 3. On January 30, "Go Won" was released including her solo "One & Only" and Chuu and Go Won's duet "See Saw" featuring Kim Lip. The fan event named "LOOΠΔ x Study Group" was held on February 3 in Theater 2, Seoul Cinema, South Korea.
On February 28, a second fan event named "LOOΠΔ Cinema Theory: Up & Line" was announced to be held at Lotte Cinema World Tower, Seoul, South Korea on March 17, on the same day as the reveal of the next twelfth and final member. That day, the member was revealed to be Olivia Hye. On March 30, "Olivia Hye" was released including her solo "Egoist" featuring JinSoul, and Go Won and Olivia Hye's duet "Rosy" featuring HeeJin.
On April 14, a third fan event named "LOOΠΔ Premier Greeting: Line & Up" was announced to be held at YES24 Live Hall, South Korea on June 2 and June 3 featuring all 12 members and live music performances. On April 27, BlockBerryCreative revealed a teaser for the third sub-unit of LOONA, LOONA yyxy, which consists of members Yves, Chuu, Go Won, and Olivia Hye. On May 24, the preview teaser for lead single "love4eva" was released for their upcoming mini album Beauty & The Beat. The album was released on May 30 along with a music video release for the lead single. The subunit went onto performing their lead single at their own event "LOONA Cinema Theory: Line & Up", at Inkigayo, M Countdown, Music Core, and The Show SBS funELIVE.
Following the third sub unit's debut, on June 2 and June 3, the third fan event "LOOΠΔ Premier Greeting: Line & Up" took place at YES24 Live Hall, South Korea".
On August 7, LOONA released "Favorite" as the lead single for their full group debut mini album, [+ +]. They held their debut concert LOONAbirth on August 19 and released [+ +] the following day with "Hi High" as the title track.
2019: LOONAVERSE, [X X], "365"[]
On January 1 at 12:00am KST, LOONA released a teaser video titled "X1X" featuring all the members and the numbers (1, 11, 21 and 31). They subsequently released teasers on January 11, 21, and 31.[3] On January 4, BlockBerryCreative announced that LOONA would be holding their second concert, LOONAVERSE, on February 16 and 17 at Olympic Hall in Seoul.[4]
They released [X X] on February 19, which is a repackage of their debut mini album [+ +]. The album contains six new songs including the title track "Butterfly".
On May 31, 2019, a video teaser was posted for LOONA's planned ballad album LOONA the Ballad (or La Maison LOONA), which previewed three songs. Jaden Jeong, who was LOONA's producer at the time, posted on his Instagram the same message displayed in the teaser: "Delayed but Someday".[5] However in a November 1, 2019 interview with MTV, Jeong confirmed the album had been scrapped following his departure from BlockBerryCreative in August due to creative differences.[6]
On December 10 at 12:00am KST, LOONA released a teaser image through their SNS with the number "365" and caption "Like the moon that shines 365 days".[7][8] On the 13th at 12:00am KST, they released the teaser video for "365" which was released later that day at 6:00pm KST as the lead single for their upcoming comeback. The single reached number 1 on the US iTunes singles chart, becoming the first Korean girl group to do so.[9]

On December 14, 2019, LOONA released a teaser video titled "#1". It was later confirmed he group would be coming back with the mini album titled [#] in the new year.[9]
On January 8, 2020, BlockBerryCreative announced that member HaSeul will not partake in their upcoming comeback promotion schedules due to being diagnosed with anxiety, and will take a temporary hiatus until her recovery. The group will continue promotions with 11 members.[10] On January 10, a second teaser video titled "#2" was released, confirming their comeback date to be February 5.[11] The third teaser, "#3", was released on January 22. The fourth teaser and preview were released on the 30th and 31st, respectively.
On February 5, their second mini album [#] was released. It contained six tracks and one hidden track including the title track "So What". On March 12, the group earned their first music show win on M Countdown against MCND's "Ice Age"[12]
On the midnight of September 17, LOONA dropped a teaser video titled "12:00". The following day, the group's comeback date was confirmed to be October 19.[13] On October 19, the group's third mini album [12:00] was released. The album consists of eight tracks including the title track "Why Not?". On December 29, LOONA dropped a teaser video titled "New Moon". The teaser also briefly featured HaSeul towards the end of the video, who had been on hiatus since January.[14]
2021: [&], "PTT (Paint The Town) Japanese Ver.", Japanese debut[]
On June 1, 2021, LOONA announced their fourth mini album, [&], set to release on June 28.[15] The company confirmed HaSeul's return the next day after releasing a teaser image featuring the eyes of all of the members.[16] On June 27, the group announced their first Japanese digital single, "PTT (Paint The Town) Japanese Ver.", which also came out on June 28, as well as their official Japanese debut date on September 15 under Universal Music Japan.[17]
On August 27, Universal Music Japan revealed that LOONA will debut with the double A-side single, "Hula Hoop / StarSeed 〜カクセイ〜". The single will be released digitally on September 15 and physically on October 20.[18] A teaser for their Japanese debut was released on September 17.[19]
2022: Queendom 2, Flip That, LOONATHEWORLD, "Luminous”, Chuu's removal and lawsuits against BlockBerryCreative[]
On February 21, Mnet revealed that the group will be participating in their reality show, Queendom 2, which is set to begin airing on March 31.[20] On February 28, BlockBerryCreative announced that members HaSeul, YeoJin, and ViVi had tested positive for COVID-19 on February 25 from a self home kit and on February 26 from a PCR test. The three members have stopped all activities and are following the guidelines and taking the necessary measures. The other members have all tested negative on the self home test on February 25. But some members did test positive on February 27. The company is currently waiting for the PCR test to confirm. As a result, the group will not be participating in the first round of Queendom 2.[21] The next day, BlockBerry announced that the PCR tests came back and that eight members, HeeJin, Kim Lip, JinSoul, Choerry, Yves, Chuu, Go Won, and Olivie Hye, had tested positive for COVID-19. The group will be halting activities for the time being.[22]
On May 25, Star News reported that LOONA will be releasing an album in June.[23]
On June 1, LOONA revealed they will be going on their first world tour LOONATHEWORLD. The group will start off the tour with nine dates across the United States.[24] On June 3, LOONA released a trailer for Flip That, a summer special mini album to be released on June 20.[25]
On July 18, LOONA's official Japanese website revealed that LOONA would be releasing their second Japanese single, "Luminous", on September 28.[26] On July 25, they announced that Chuu did not participate in the album's promotions due to her predetermined individual schedule for the latter half of the year.[27]
On November 25, BlockBerryCreative released a statement announcing Chuu's removal from the group due to allegedly using violent language and misusing her power towards staff members.[28]
In an article published by JTBC on November 28, all LOONA members except Hyunjin and Vivi reportedly filed a lawsuit to suspend their contracts with BlockBerryCreative due to their trust in the company being damaged. BlockBerryCreative denied all claims.[29]
2023–present: [0], first Japan concert, lawsuit results, aftermath[]
On December 7, 2022, BlockBerryCreative announced that LOONA were currently preparing for a comeback, but the date had not been confirmed.[30] On December 12, a teaser was released for their upcoming comeback, which would be released on January 3.[31] On December 13, it was revealed from the album trailer that they would be releasing their origin album, [0].[32]. On December 22, BlockBerryCreative announced through LOONA's fancafe that the album has been postponed indefinitely due to the recent events surrounding the group.[33] It also later became known that the members of the group themselves were not notified that they would have a comeback.
On January 13, the Seoul Northern District Court announced that they ruled in favor of HeeJin, Kim Lip, JinSoul, and Choerry to suspend their contracts while the court dismissed the case of the five other members: HaSeul, YeoJin, Yves, Go Won and Olivia Hye, as their contracts underwent provisions in the past and must be carried out as is.[34][35]
Later on February 1, it was reported that BlockBerryCreative has submitted a petition to court, requesting a ban of former members Chuu, HeeJin, Kim Lip, JinSoul and Choerry from the Korean entertainment industry altogether.[36][37][38]
On February 3, it was reported that Vivi and Hyunjin would be filling a lawsuit to suspend their contracts with BlockBerryCreative after the court gave divided rulings on similar cases involving the rest of the girl group members.[39][40] On May 9, it was announced that ViVi and Hyunjin had won their lawsuits against BlockBerryCreative to suspend their contracts and would leaving the agency.[41] On June 11, it was announced that the two had signed with new agency, CTDENM, founded by Yoon Do Yeon who was previously a director in BlockBerryCreative.[42]
On March 3, the group, with 11-members, held their first Japan concert, LOONA 1st Live "LOONATHEWORLD in Tokyo", at Tachikawa Stage Garden in Tokyo. The concert was reportedly held due to their exclusive contract with their Japanese agency, Universal Music Japan, regardless of the earlier lawsuit results.[43]
On March 17, it was announced that HeeJin, Kim Lip, JinSoul and Choerry had signed exclusive contracts with MODHAUS.[44]
On April 7, it was announced that Chuu had signed an exclusive contract with new agency, ATRP.[45]
On June 12, CTDENM announced that they signed with HyunJin and ViVi.[46]
On June 16, media outlet Seoul Kyungjae reported that the Seoul High Court's 5th Civil Cases Division ruled in favor of the five remaining LOONA members, who appealed for an injunction to suspend the validity of their exclusive contract with agency BlockberryCreative. With this ruling, all 12 members have now left the agency.[47]
On June 20, it was announced that HaSeul also signed with MODHAUS and joined their strategy project, ARTMS, along with the other LOONA members under the company.[48] ARTMS will debut on May 31, 2024.
On July 5, it was announced that Go Won, HyeJu (formerly Olivia Hye), YeoJin also signed exclusive contracts with CTDENM.[49] All five members under the company later debuted as Loossemble on September 15.
During the press conference for ODD EYE CIRCLE's mini album <Version Up>, member Kim Lip confirmed that LOONA has not disbanded and that they are opened to possibilities for a comeback as a whole.[50]
On March 13, 2024, Yves announced she had signed an exclusive contract with Paix Per Mil.[51]

- Their group name is created from a rearrangement of the first consonants of the hangul that spells out their name. In other words, ㅇㄷㅇㅅㄴ is rearranged to ㄴㅇㅇㄷㅅ, which then becomes LOOΠΔ.
- Revealed by HaSeul in LOONA TV #40, each member is chosen based on a group performance test. Meaning HeeJin achieved the highest score first and hence got to debut as the first member.
- The first five members traveled across the world for their solo promotions.
- The locations include Paris, Tokyo, Iceland, London, Taiwan, Hong Kong, New Zealand, and Prague.
- For the release of LOONA TV #100, LOONA TV #99 was in the form of a teaser, introducing LOONA's V Live account where they did #100 live.
- Revealed through social media, the last 4 spots in LOONA were still being chosen from a pool of 50 trainees under the name of "LOOΠΔTIOΠ". Later disclosed in Kim Lip's CeCi China interview, members Yves, Chuu, and Go Won were selected and confirmed in December 2017.
- Olivia Hye, however, was not chosen until March 2018, and was a trainee under BBC for one day before debuting.[56]
- The music videos, teasers, video descriptions, and other forms of media convey the story of the "LOONAVERSE".
- The group's unofficial fandom name was "Loonatics" until BBC released that the official name was "Orbits".
- There are no official positions for the group set by BBC.
- ViVi is the oldest member in the group at 27, the youngest being YeoJin at 21.
