Jackson Wang (잭슨왕, or simply as Jackson) is a Hong Kong rapper, singer-songwriter, composer and producer under Team Wang and 88rising. He is a member of the boy group GOT7 and co-ed hip hop group PANTHEPACK.

He made his solo debut on August 26, 2017 with the single "Papillon".

Early life[]

Jackson was born on March 28, 1994 in Hong Kong. His father was an Olympic fencer and his mother an Olympic gymnast.[1] He started training in fencing at the age of ten[1] and went on to win first place at the Asian Junior and Cadet Fencing Championships in 2011.[2] He ranked 11th in the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics.[3]

He was a student at the American International School in Hong Kong up until eleventh grade. Jackson turned down a Stanford fencing scholarship to pursue his dreams as a singer.[1]

Career[]

Pre-debut[]

In 2011, Jackson moved to South Korea to become a trainee under JYP Entertainment.[1] During his two and a half years of training, he appeared on the reality survival program WIN: Who Is Next which aired on Mnet in 2013. He competed alongside his fellow group members Yugyeom, BamBam and Mark.[4]

2014–2016: Various appearances on TV shows[]

Since GOT7's debut in January 2014, Jackson has made many individual appearances especially after his popularity rose after his appearances on the SBS reality show Roommate, which earned him the Newcomer Award at the SBS Entertainment Awards in 2014.[5] He has appeared on multiple Korean variety shows such as Star King, Problematic Men, Radio Star, Law of the Jungle, Happy Together and many others.

Jackson has also been appointed as the MC for SBS's music show Inkigayo[6] and Fresh Sunday, a show on Hunan TV. He has also been the presenter of Go Fridge.[1]

2017–2019: Team Wang foundation, solo debut[]

In 2017, Jackson founded his own label in China, called Team Wang, in order to pursue a solo career. He subsequently made his solo debut on August 26 with "Papillon". He gives creative input on everything he releases with Team Wang, writing his lyrics, producing the tracks, and choosing the music video contents, the outfits, the editing of the video.[7]

After rumours arose that he would leave GOT7 in order to solely promote as a soloist, Jackson expressed his commitment to the group multiple times and shared that he "has no plans whatsoever to leave the group and considers it a true family that transcends business relations".[8] He divides his year in two, spending six months in Korea to work with GOT7 and six months in China to pursue his solo endeavours.[7]

2020: Team Wang Design launch, mentor on Street Dance of China[]

On July 18, 2020, Jackson launched Team Wang Design, his own fashion brand. He is its founder, creative director, and designer. The clothes are sold at a pop-up concept store in Shanghai, at a store in New York and through an online platform.[9] In one day, the first part of the collection was sold-out at the New York branch. Some sizes on the website were sold out as well.[10]

He became, in 2020, a mentor in the third season of Street Dance of China.[11]

2021: Departure from JYP Entertainment[]

On January 10, it was reported by Dispatch that all GOT7 members would be leaving JYP Entertainment after 7 years of contract, with the 35th Golden Disc Awards being their last activity as a group.[12] On January 11, JYP Entertainment officially announced that the members will be leaving the agency as their contract expires on January 19.[13]
