Idol School (아이돌 학교) was a 2017 girl group reality survival show broadcast on Mnet. It was a large-scale project in which the public "produces" a unit girl group by choosing members from a pool of 41 trainees. The aim of the show is to create a 9-member girl group named fromis_9.

Aftermath[]

  • fromis_9 released their first digital single "Glass Shoes" on November 30, 2017. It acted as a pre-debut track prior to their official debut on January 24, 2018 when they released their first mini album To. Heart.

Other contestants

  • Lee Seul retired from Kpop and moved to the Philippines where she became a YouTuber (Channel: Jessica Lee).
  • Snowbaby retired from Kpop and moved to Taiwan to pursue a career as an actress. She made her debut as an actress in 2018.
  • Jeong Somi debuted as an actress in late 2017 with the release of Because This Is My First Life.
  • Kim Eungyul joined YG Entertainment sometime in 2018. However, she left the company sometime in 2020.
  • Cho Yubin joined MyDoll Entertainment and on October 24, 2018, she debuted as 'Yubeen', a member of PinkFantasy. In 2020, she left PinkFantasy but remained with her agency.
  • Bae Eunyoung joined Stone Music Entertainment and in 2018, appeared as a contestant on Produce 48. She was eliminated in the eight episode with her final rank in 36th place.
  • Lee Sian joined Stone Music Entertainment and in 2018, appeared as a contestant on Produce 48. She was eliminated in the eleventh episode with her final rank in 30th place. By 2020, she had quit pursuing a career in K-pop and is now a model.
  • Jo Yuri joined Stone Music Entertainment and in 2018, appeared as a contestant on Produce 48. She finished in 3rd place and debuted as a member of IZ*ONE on October 29, 2018.
    • After IZ*ONE's disbandment, Yuri debuted as a soloist on October 7, 2021, with the single album "Glassy".
  • Jo Serim joined Yue Hua Entertainment and on March 18, 2019, she debuted as 'Onda', a member of EVERGLOW.
  • Lee Yujung joined BRICKWORKS Company and on April 18, 2019, she debuted as 'Haru', a member of API. API disbanded in 2021.
  • Som Hyein debuted as a soloist on May 23, 2018 with the digital single "Mini Radio".
  • Kim Myungji debuted as an actress in July 2019 with the release of Class of Lies in which she played the role of Na Yeri.
  • Park Sun joined Starship Entertainment sometime in 2019 and on September 26, 2019 was revealed as a trainee member of their trainee group STARSHIPZ.
    • By 2021, she had left STARSHIPZ and joined King Kong by Starship, to pursue a career as an actress.
  • Natty joined Swing Entertainment in 2020 and debuted as a soloist on May 7, 2020 with her debut single album "NineTeen".
    • She later departed from Swing Entertainment and joined S2 Entertainment and became a member of their girl group KISS OF LIFE. She debuted with them on July 5, 2023 with their self-titled debut mini album KISS OF LIFE.
  • Lee Haein joined The Groove Company (later merged to become Big Ocean ENM) in 2020 and debuted as a soloist on November 27, 2020 with the debut single album "Santa Lullaby (We Used To Sing)".
    • By 2021, she had departed from Big Ocean ENM and joined S2 Entertainment and AURA to work as a producer. She is currently the creative director for KISS OF LIFE, the agency of her former fellow contestant.
  • In late 2021, Shin Sia decided to focus on her career as a producer for K-pop. Her first professional work as a producer was for Weki Meki for whom she produced the song "Who Am I", released in their album I Am Me. on November 18, 2021.
  • Kim Nayeon debuted as a soloist on December 13, 2021 with the digital single "Merry Solo Christmas".

Vote manipulation investigation[]

It was reported on September 6, 2019, that Idol School was also under investigation by police for possible voting manipluation.[2]

On July 6, 2020, two producers on the show were indicted for charges that included obstruction of business and fraud.[3] On November 9, 2020, the trial began for the two producers. Kim Tae Eun, the chief producer of the show, admitted to all charges including manipulating the paid votes but pleaded not guilty.[4]
