Hyunjoo (현주) is a South Korean singer and actress under STUDIO 1592. She is a former member of the girl group APRIL and the project girl group UNI.T.
Career[]
2015–2016: APRIL, hiatus and departure[]
On August 24, 2015, Hyunjoo made her debut as a member of the girl group APRIL with the release of their first mini album Dreaming.[1]
On May 12, 2016, DSP Media announced that Hyunjoo would temporarily halt activities due to concerns regarding her health.[2]
On October 29, 2016, it was announced that Hyunjoo would ultimately leave APRIL due to a change of career path. Through the company's official statement, it was announced that Hyunjoo would fully transition as an actress following discussions during her hiatus.[3]
2017–2018: The Unit, UNI.T[]
In September 2017, it was announced that Hyunjoo would be partaking in the survival show The Unit as a contestant. The first episode aired on October 28, where she was formally revealed with her performance of KARA's "Pretty Girl".[4][5]
On February 10, 2018, the final episode of The Unit aired where it was revealed that Hyunjoo had finished at 5th place, thus earning a spot in the project girl group UNI.T. UNI.T debuted on May 18, with the mini album Line.[6]
UNI.T disbanded on October 12, 2018, after only five months of promotions.[7]
2023: New agency[]
In April 2023, it was reported that Hyunjoo had signed an exclusive contract with STUDIO 1592 to resume activities as an actress.[8]
Personal life[]
Bullying allegations against APRIL[]
On February 28, 2021, an online post made by someone claiming to be her younger brother stated that Hyunjoo had actually left APRIL due to being bullied by the members. Another person claiming to be one of her classmates also made similar allegations and added that all the members including former member Somin but excluding Rachel and Chaekyung (who joined after Hyunjoo's departure) took part in the bullying and that Hyunjoo had also attempted suicide. On March 1, DSP Media released a statement denying the allegations being made.[9] A second statement from the agency was released later that same day to make clarifications on their first statement.[10]
On March 3, 2021, the person claiming to be her younger brother criticized DSP's response to the allegations and refuted the agency's own claims. Later that same day, DSP announced that they would be taking legal action against Hyunjoo's family and the alleged former classmate.[11]
On April 18, 2021, Hyunjoo released her first personal statement on the allegations. She stated the bullying began in 2014 and lasted until her departure from the group in 2016. During those three years, she was physically and verbally abused by the members and when her parents raised the issue with the agency, they did not take any action. The members tormented her even more after it was founded out. Hyunjoo also stated that she fell into a dark place and had attempted suicide. Lastly, she explained that DSP would not let her terminate her exclusive contract with them.[12] On February 23, 2022, all seven defamation lawsuits against Hyunjoo and her family were dropped by the police without any charges. The police stated that they couldn't find any proof that the statements made by Hyunjoo and her family contained false claims and/or malicious intentions.[13]
