Hyungwon (Korean: 형원; Japanese: ヒョンウォン) is a South Korean singer-songwriter, composer, DJ and actor under Starship Entertainment. He is a member of the boy group MONSTA X and its sub-unit Shownu X Hyungwon, and a former member of the project group Y TEEN.

As a DJ, he goes by the stage name DJ H.ONE.

Career[]

Early life[]

Hyungwon was born on January 15, 1994, in Gwangju. He has two siblings and his parents are owners of a travel agency. He used to want to be a lawyer.[1]

Pre-debut[]

In Seoul, he was a student at the Joy Dance – Plug In Music Academy.[1] He also appeared on multiple fashion shows as a model, like the W Hotel and CéCi Fashion Show, in 2014.[2]

2014-2015: NO.MERCY, Monsta X[]

Hyungwon participated in the Mnet reality survival show NO.MERCY, where he competed to be a part of Starship Entertainment's new boy group. In the last episode, he was confirmed to be in the final lineup.[3] The group, revealed to be called MONSTA X, debuted on May 15, 2015 with the mini-album Trespass.

2017-2018: DJ activities[]

As a DJ, under the name DJ H.ONE, Hyungwon performed at the electronic music festival Ultra Korea two years in a row, in 2017 and 2018. He also participated in KCON Japan in 2017, as well as multiple other live shows. He has released a few collaborative tracks, two of which feature fellow MONSTA X member Joohoney.[1][2]

2019: "Cool Love"[]

With VIXX's Hongbin, he released "Cool Love" on July 10, 2019. The single was part of the "Pepsi X Starship Project".[1]

2021: Fly Again[]

It was announced on June 8 that Hyungwon was cast as the male lead in the then upcoming web drama Fly Again. It would be his first lead role.[4] He played as the character Han Yo-han (한요한), eventually becomes a member of the boy group VILLAINZ. The first episode aired on November 13 while the tenth and final episode aired on December 15.

Military service[]

On October 20, 2023, Hyungwon posted a handwritten letter through the MONSTA X fancafe which announced that he would be enlisting in the military on November 14 to minimize the group's hiatus.[5] He is expected to be discharged on May 13, 2025.
