On December 27, 2021, SM Entertainment opened the social networks for Girls On Top, at the same time revealed their first unit's name, its first photo, its members and debut date. The unit called, GOT the beat, held a special stage at SMTOWN Live 2022 : SMCU Express@Kwangya on January 1, 2022 before releasing their new song on January 3.[1]
Later that same day, SM explained that Girls on Top is the agency's newest project in which female artists under the SM will show different unit combinations by theme. The project's first unit, GOT the beat, is based on intense dance songs and performances.[2]
