GI (지아이), short for Global Icon, is an independent girl group. Originally as five, they debuted under SimTong Entertainment on April 3, 2013 with their first single "Beatles". They had several lineup changes over their three years of activity before disbanding in 2016.

In October 2023, original member I gained permission to use the group name GI for an independent reformation and thus three new members joined the girl group. They were planning to make a comeback sometime in 2024,[1] However, nothing has been released.

History[]

2013: Debut with "Beatles"[]

On April 3, 2013, GI made their debut with their first digital single “Beatles” and gained attention for their "tomboy-ish" concept.

After some scheduling issues, they pre-released their 2nd digital single "Because of You" on August 30, 2013 then released their first mini album "Tremendous" on September 3, 2013.

2014-2015: Lineup changes, contract termination lawsuit, concept change with "Doligo Doligo"[]

On June 25, 2014, Simtong Entertainment announced that Aram had left the group through their international fanbase.[2]

On November 14, 2014, they announced that Hayun had already left the group sometime in August.[3]

On February 25, 2015, the group released their 3rd digital single "Echo", which included Aram's vocals as she recorded this before leaving the group. On the same day, it was revealed that OneKet had filed a contract termination lawsuit against Simtong Entertainment and they responded with the claim that OneKet and Aram had breached their contracts.[4]

On June 29, 2015, GI introduced three new members Dokyung, Jiamin and Heeso. The group later made their comeback with the new lineup on September 2, 2015 with the digital single "Doligo Doligo", switching from the "tomboy-ish" concept that the group were known for to a more feminine and sexy concept.

2016: Disbandment[]

In January 2016, Heeso rejoined HEXE so it was assumed that she had left the group.

On March 28, 2016, Eunji announced her departure from the group on Twitter.[5] At the same time, Dokyung deleted all of her posts on Twitter.[6]

Due to inactivity on their SNS, GI was assumed to have disbanded sometime in 2016.

2023–present: Comeback with new lineup[]

In 2023, original member I (formerly AI) had a discussion with SimTong Entertainment and gained permission to use the group name GI. The group later added 3 new members: Lli, Hyena, Yebin and plans to make their comeback sometime in 2024.[1]
