Expectation (기대) is the second mini album by D.O.. It was released on September 18, 2023 with "Somebody" serving as the album's title track.

"I Do" was pre-released on September 8, 2023.

The physical album comes in three versions: Note, Film, and SMini.

Background

On September 2, 2022, D.O announced that he is recording his next album, which will be released after the completion of his drama by early 2023. On August 3, 2023, D.O stated in an interview that he completed recording, music video, and jacket shooting for his upcoming album last May.

On September 1, SM Entertainment dropped a teaser for his second mini album, Expectation, set to release on September 18.

Composition

The title track, "Somebody", is a pop folk song that features the sincere emotions of D.O.'s voice, over an acoustic guitar rhythm. The lyrics contain a story of one expecting to meet someone who accepts "me" as I am, and not a made-up appearance.

"Wonder" is described as a medium tempo folk song with a lighthearted reggae rhythm. The lyrics expresses meeting someone special in an ordinary daily life, and hoping it can become a novel-like story.

"Ordinary Days" is a slow tempo pop song talking about the expectation on how we may look like in the upcoming days, and what dreams we will be dreaming of.

"The View" is described as an acoustic pop song combining guitar arpeggio and D.O.'s warm vocals. The lyrics express the hope that the person you miss will remains as a beautiful memory.

"Lost," is a pop song with an impressive chorus with tense drums sound, and express the feeling of pain due to the collapse of expectations for a love that was thought to be eternal.

Expectation was ranked #18 on Billboard's top 25 K-pop album of 2023.

Commercial performance

Expectation reached #1 on the iTunes Top Albums charts in 42 regions.

Expectation reached 2 065 800 streams in the first 24 hours since its release on Melon.
