"Ddu-Du Ddu-Du" (뚜두뚜두) is a song by BLACKPINK. It was released on June 15, 2018 and serves as the title track for their first mini album Square Up.
It was later released as the group's first Japanese single digitally on July 23, 2018 and physically on August 22, 2018.
Background[]
On June 1, 2018, YG Entertainment released the first teaser for BLACKPINK's upcoming June comeback. The moving poster revealed the group would be releasing their first mini album, Square Up, on June 15. On June 4, a track list teaser was released, confirming the album will contain a total of four tracks including the title track "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du."[1]
Composition[]
Written and produced by Teddy, as well as co-produced by 24, Bekuh Boom and R.Tee, this song is described by Billboard as a "fierce hip-pop track overflowing with charisma" that "features" a prominent trap beat.[2] Forbes adds that it combines "crisp trap beats, breezy synth hooks and infectious vocal melodies".[3]

"Ddu-Du Ddu-Du", along with its music video, was released on June 15, 2018 at 6 pm KST.
BLACKPINK held their first comeback stage for the song on the June 16 episode of Show! Music Core.[4]
Music video[]
Following the music video's release, "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du", at the time, became the most-viewed Korean video and second most-watched video on YouTube in the first 24 hours with more than 36.2 million views, surpassing PSY's "Gentleman" and behind Taylor Swift's "Look What You Made Me Do", respectively.[5] It was then surpassed by BTS' "Idol" on August 27, 2018.[6]
"Ddu-Du Ddu-Du" became the fastest K-pop group music video to reach the 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, and 700 million view milestones.[7][8][9][10][11][12] On November 11, 2019, the music video became the first one by an K-pop group to reach 1 billion views on YouTube.[13] It is currently the most viewed Korean music video by a K-pop group on YouTube with over 1.8 billion views.[14]
Commercial performance[]
In South Korea, "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du" debuted at number three on Gaon Digital Chart for the week of June 10–16, 2018.[15] The following week, the song rose to number one on the chart, making it their second number-one song in the country after "Whistle."[16][17]
In the United States, the song debuted and peaked at number 55 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the highest-charting song by a K-pop girl group on the Hot 100 at the time. The record was previously held by Wonder Girls' "Nobody" which charted at number 76 in 2009. In its first week, the song had 12.4 million streams and sold 7,000 downloads in the country.[18]
On November 10, 2022, "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du" received a 2x platinum certification for reaching over 200 million streams on Circle Chart.[19]
