Chen (첸) is a South Korean singer, lyricist and actor under INB 100. He is a member of the boy group EXO, its sub-units EXO-M and EXO-CBX, and the project ballad group S.M. THE BALLAD.
He made his solo debut on April 1, 2019 with his first mini album April, and a Flower.
Career[]
2012: Debut with EXO[]
He debuted as a member of EXO and its sub-unit EXO-M on April 9, 2012 with the group's first mini album Mama.
2016: Debut with EXO-CBX[]
On October 31, 2016, Chen debuted as a member of the group's sub-unit EXO-CBX with the mini album Hey Mama!.
2019–2020: Solo debut with April, and a Flower, Dear My Dear, "Hello"[]
On March 19, 2019, it was announced that Chen will make his solo debut on April 1, 2019 with his first mini album April, and a Flower.[2]
On August 29, it was confirmed that Chen will be making his first comeback in early October. On September 11, his second mini album, Dear My Dear was announced to be released on October 1.[3]
On October 8, 2020, Chen announced his first digital single "Hello" on October 15.[4]
2022–2023: Last Scene, "Before the Petals Fall", Japanese debut with Polaris, lawsuit against SM Entertainment[]
On October 11, 2022, it was announced that Chen will be making his first comeback since his return from the military with his third mini album Last Scene, which will be released on October 31.[5]
On May 15, 2023, he released his second digital single "Before the Petals Fall".
On May 29, it was announced that Chen will be making his Japanese debut on August 17 with his first mini album Polaris, along with his first Japanese tour.[6]
On June 1, Chen, alongside Xiumin and Baekhyun, announced through their legal representative and lawyer Lee Jae Hak from law firm LIN, that they have taken legal action against SM Entertainment, citing unreasonable long-term contracts and non-transparency regarding settlement reports. They added that the termination of their existing exclusive contracts is effective as of this day.[7] SM Entertainment released a statement refuting their claims.[8] On June 19, SM Entertainment stated that they partially revised the contract of the three artists, who will remain in the company and continue to be active in EXO activities.[9]
2024: Agency changes, Door, "Beyond:"[]
On January 7, it was announced that Chen, along with bandmates Xiumin and Baekhyun, would be continuing their solo activities, as well as EXO-CBX activities, under Baekhyun's newly-established agency INB 100. However, the three members will remain as part of EXO.[10]
On May 7, it was announced that he will be releasing his fourth mini album Door on May 28.[11]
On September 27, it was announced that Chen will release his third digital single "Beyond:" on October 1.[12]
Personal life[]
Relationship and family[]
On January 13, 2020, Chen posted a handwritten letter on EXO's official fancafe on LYSN announcing his marriage to a non-celebrity girlfriend who is also expecting a baby. SM confirmed the news, stating the wedding will be held privately.[13][14]
On April 29, 2020, SM Entertainment confirmed that Chen's wife had given birth to the couple's first child, a daughter, that day.[15]
On November 16, 2021, SM Entertainment confirmed that the couple is expecting their second child.[16] On January 19, 2022, SM Entertainment confirmed that Chen's wife had given birth to their second child that day; however, they did not specify the gender.[17] The child was later found to be a girl.[citation needed]
On August 16, 2023, it was announced that Chen will be hosting a wedding ceremony with his wife in October.[18]
Military service[]
On October 14, 2020, Chen announced in a handwritten letter that he would be enlisting on October 26.[19] He was discharged on April 25, 2022.[20]
