BTOB (비투비) is a six-member boy group under BTOB COMPANY. Formed by Cube Entertainment and originally as seven, they made their debut on March 21, 2012 with their first digital single "Insane".
Their name is an acronym for "Born To Beat".
History[]
2012: Debut, first comeback with Born to Beat, Press Play[]
BTOB officially debuted as a seven-member group with their first single "Insane" on March 21, 2012. They subsequently released their first mini album, Born to Beat, on April 3.
On September 12, the group made their second comeback through releasing their second mini album Press Play.
2013: Thriller[]
On September 9, 2013, BTOB returned with the release of their third mini album Thriller.
2014: Rise in popularity, Move, Japanese debut[]
Their fourth mini album Beep Beep was released on February 17, 2014. The album's title track of the same name was produced by Brave Brothers, their first collaboration with the producer.[1] Beep Beep debuted at number 1 on Gaon Album Chart for the ninth week of 2014, making it their first album to do so.[2]
The group released their fifth mini album Move on September 29.
BTOB held their first-ever solo concert, Hello Melody, on October 31 and November 1 at Olympic Park's Olympic Hall.[3]
On October 1, 2014, it was reported that the group had signed a contract with KISS Entertainment to begin their promotions in Japan.[4] They made ther Japanese debut on November 12 with the single "Wow".
2015: Complete, I Mean[]
BTOB released their first full-length album Complete on June 28, 2015. The title track, "It's Okay", was the group's first-ever ballad title track.[5]
Their third Japanese single, "Natsuiro My Girl", was released on August 19, after the conclusion of promoting "It's Okay".
The group returned to the scene with their seventh mini album I Mean on October 12. On October 21, BTOB received their first-ever music show win with the title track "Way Back Home" on Show Champion.[6]
2016: Remember That, New Men, 24/7[]
On March 28, 2016, BTOB released their eighth mini album, Remember That, marking the end of their ballad trilogy.
The group returned on November 7 with their ninth mini album New Men. "I'll Be Your Man" served as their first dance title track in almost two years.[7]
They released their first Japanese full-length album, 24/7, on December 7, 2016.
2017: Feel'eM, Piece of BTOB, Brother Act.[]
On March 6, BTOB released their 10th mini album Feel'eM.
From April to September, all members of the group released solo digital singles as part of the Piece of BTOB project. Changsub started the project with a self-composed ballad track "At the End". It was followed by Ilhoon's up-tempo hip-hop track "Fancy Shoes", Peniel's "That Girl", Hyunsik's self-produced alternative-rock track "Swimming", Minhyuk's R&B hip-hop song "Purple Rain" featuring singer CHEEZE, Sungjae's ballad track "Tell Me" along with the b-side, "Paradise" and was concluded with Seo Eun-kwang's ballad track "One Day" and the b-side "Back Then".
BTOB was awarded their first Bonsang at the 1st Soribada Best K-Music Awards on September 20, 2017.[8]
Following the end of their Piece of BTOB project, the group released their second full-length album Brother Act. on October 16.
2018–2019: This is Us, Hour Moment contract renewal, enlistment[]
On June 11, 2018, BTOB released a pre-release single, "The Feeling" before subsequently releasing their 11th mini album This Is Us on June 18.
On July 10, all seven members announced that they've renewed their exclusive contracts with Cube Entertainment.[9]
During a VLive broadcast on August 13, Minhyuk was randomly selected to be the group's second leader due to Eunkwang beginning his military service on August 21.[10][11]
On November 12, 2018, the group released their first special album Hour Moment without the participation of Eunkwang, who was on hiatus during that time for his military service. Changsub then enlisted on January 14, 2019.[12]
On March 21, 2019, BTOB celebrated their seventh anniversary and chose a new leader now that Minhyuk has enlisted for his military service as well. Peniel was selected to be the leader, however, due to their decision beforehand, Sungjae became the third leader.[13]
On April 5, 2019, a digital single "Sorry" was released. It was a song that Eunkwang, Minhyuk, and Changsub prepared before their respective enlistments.[14]
2020–2021: Military service, BTOB 4U, Ilhoon's departure, 4U:Outside[]
On April 7, 2020, Eunkwang was officially discharged following protocols as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.[15] Hyunsik and Sungjae enlisted on May 11, while Ilhoon enlisted on May 28.[16][17] Changsub was officially discharged on August 21, 2020, followed by Minhyuk on September 12. Both were discharged earlier due to the current COVID-19 protocol.[18][19]
On October 27, 2020, Eunkwang, Minhyuk, Changsub and Peniel revealed that they have formed the group's second subunit BTOB 4U, which debuted on November 16.[20]
On December 31, 2020, Cube Entertainment announced that Ilhoon had officially left BTOB after he was caught for using marijuana and that the remaining members would continue as a six member group.[21]
On August 30, 2021, the group released their special album 4U : Outside and its title track "Outsider". On October 27, BTOB released their first Japanese special mini album Outsider.
Hyunsik and Sungjae were discharged from the military on November 14, 2021, completing BTOB's military service.[22] They then participated BTOB's Kiss the Radio, which was hosted by Minhyuk. This marked their first full group activity in three years.[23]
2022: Be Together, Peniel's hiatus[]
The group made their comeback as a full group of six with their third full-length album Be Together on February 21, 2022.
On August 12, it was reported that Peniel would be taking a temporary hiatus from activities after he had injured his ankle two days ago and would be undergoing surgery until his ankle is recovered.[24]
2023: Wind and Wish, departure from Cube Entertainment[]
On April 5, 2023, Cube Entertainment revealed that the group will be having an comeback in early May.[25] On April 12, a teaser video was released, revealing that BTOB would release their twelfth mini album, Wind and Wish, on May 2.[26]
On May 2, it was announced that Peniel will not be participating in the group's comeback promotions due to lingering back pain.[27]
On August 28, JTBC News reported that BTOB's exclusive contracts will be expiring member-by-member starting in September. Cube Entertainment stated that the members are positively considering renewal.[28] On November 1, Cube Entertainment told media outlets that they are still discussing contract renewal with the members.[29] On November 6, Cube announced that BTOB's exclusive contracts expired and they decided not to renew.[30] They also shared that they are positively discussing with the members concerning trademark rights.[31]
2024: BTOB COMPANY, 90TAN debut, "Please Stay"[]
On January 29, 2024, it was confirmed that BTOB will be having a comeback in March.[32] However as of mid-2024, it has yet to be released.
On February 21, comprehensive entertainment company DOD announced that they established the label BTOB COMPANY for BTOB. The label reached an agreement with Cube Entertainment to use the existing group name for their future activities.[33]
On July 23, it was announced that members Eunkwang and Minhyuk will be forming the sub-unit 90TAN and will be debuting on July 31 with the single "Tang Tang Tang".[34]
On October 23, BTOB announced the "Becoming Project" and will be releasing three digital singles,[35] starting with "Please Stay", scheduled for October 31.[36]
