BLACKSWAN (블랙스완; also spelled as Blackswan or Black Swan) is a four-member[2] South Korean-based multinational girl group under DR Music. They made their debut on October 16, 2020 with their first full-length album Goodbye RANIA.[3][4]
History[]
2020: Renaming as BLACKSWAN, new members, debut with Goodbye RANIA[]
On June 26, 2020, RaNia's Hyeme announced through her group's SNS that she was the only member left, so it would be strange to release an album under the name RaNia, arguing that due to this the group would start fresh under the name B.S. (BLACKSWAN) and that they would soon be releasing a new album, with new members.[5]
On July 1, Youngheun posted a letter to her Instagram thanking fans for their continued support and good news. She revealed she was going to be a part of B.S. alongside Hyeme and several new members.[6] On July 3, Lisa (Larissa) posted a letter also stating that she will be part of the group under the stage name Leia.[7]
On July 7, the group was appointed as ambassadors of Pyeongchang-gun, alongside K-TIGERS ZERO, to promote the county.[8] The news also revealed two new members.[9][10]
In an interview with Korean news program Channel A News on September 16, the group revealed that they were expected to debut in early 2020, but it had been postponed indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the difficulties that came with it.[11] On September 25, an article on Bunja Dongne Times revealed that the group would be debuting in October 2020, with the music video already filmed.[3]
On October 9, it was announced via the group's social medias that they would be debuting on October 16 with their first full-length album Goodbye RANIA.[4]
On November 9, media outlet Dispatch reported that member Hyeme was accused of fraud after allegedly scamming an unidentifed male office worker out of 50 million KRW ($45,000 USD) that was lent to pay for her rent, living expenses and credit card bills. The following day, DR Music announced they would be filing a counter lawsuit against the individual. The agency also revealed that Hyeme's exclusive contract had ended on November 7 but will still legally represent her until the issue is resolved. At the same time, it was announced that BLACKSWAN would go on a temporary hiatus.[12][13]
2021: "Close to Me" and bullying allegations[]
On September 30, 2021, it was announced that they would release their first single album "Close to Me" on October 14, which would be their long-awaited comeback after their hiatus.[14]
On November 12, a tweet from a fanbase of Leia's that claims Leia is being bullied by fellow member, Fatou. The information was allegedly from a relative.[15] Two days later, on November 14, Fatou refuted the claims in a now deleted tweet and claimed that Leia was not the victim but rather playing the victim.[16] On November 19, DR Music released a statement that "the team's internal issues were distorted". They apologized and said the constructive dispute has since been settled.[17]
2022: Lineup changes, Leia's hiatus[]
On May 26, 2022, DR Music officially revealed Gabi and Sriya as the newest members of BLACKSWAN.[18]
On July 31, 2022, DR Music officially announced that members Youngheun and Judy had graduated from the group.[19]
On November 9, 2022, DR Music announced that Leia is currently under hiatus due to health problems, and is still currently staying in Brazil.[20]
On December 24, 2022, BLACKSWAN uploaded the behind the scene video of their Christmas pictorial in which Alena Smith has appeared in, confirming her addition to the group.[21] It was also revealed that she would be promoting using the stage name NVee.
2023: "That Karma", Leia's departure, "That Karma - Pop Edition", 1st US Tour[]
On May 8, 2023, it was announced that BLACKSWAN would be making their comeback with the single album "That Karma" on May 19.[22]
On July 31, 2023, group member Fatou revealed on the Veeper app that the current lineup of BLACKSWAN would remain with the four members and no more new members would be added, thus revealing Leia's departure from the group.[2]
On August 30, 2023, it was announced that BLACKSWAN would continue promotions of "That Karma" with 'Cat & Mouse', and release the single "That Karma - Pop Edition" on September 6.[23]
On October 5, 2023, the group revealed they would be going on their first United States tour Blackswan's 1st U.S. Tour Showcase Hello LUMINA. The group would start off the tour with the first date in Los Angeles on November 10, 2023.[24]
2024: Seoul Fashion Week[]
On February 5, 2024, it was revealed that BLACKSWAN would be walking at Seoul Fashion Week, modeling for the brand 'Greedilous' and would have a surprise performance at the event.[25]
