BABYMONSTER (베이비몬스터; also stylized as BABYMONS7ER or BabyMonster ) is a seven-member girl group under YG Entertainment. They made their debut with complete members on April 1, 2024[2] with the mini album BABYMONS7ER. Previously, they debuted as six members on November 27, 2023 with the digital single "Batter Up".
History[]
Pre-debut[]
On December 12, 2019, YG Entertainment officially trademarked the name BABYMONSTERS. On February 18, 2020, the company also trademarked the name BAEMON.[3] Previously, BLACKPINK's Jisoo mentioned in an interview that BABYMONSTERS was among the group's potential names pre-debut.[4]
In February 2020, YG Entertainment unveiled two Chinese female trainees, Jane Wang and Vicky Wei, through the Chinese survival show Idol Producer 3.[5] In the trainees' profile descriptions for the show, the name BABYMONSTER appears; also, they introduced themselves using the group name in the show's first episode.[6][7] On September 1, 2020 a YG Plus performance expectations report stated that the new girl group "BABYMONSTER" is ready to debut.[8] On November 13, 2020, a financial report from Hana Financial hinted that YG Entertainment's would be debuting a new girl group in early 2021.
On January 2, 2021, media outlet EDAILY reported more than 10 entertainment labels are planning to debut their new boy and girl groups this year, including YG Entertainment's new girl group in 2021.[9] On February 5, YGE expressed again through a financial report plans to debut a new girl group in 2021.[10]
On March 1, 2021, questioned during an interview about the background voices in the song "IYAH", Yoon from WINNER replied that the voices belonged to members of TREASURE and the future members of YG's new girl group.[11]
On May 18, 2021, OSEN exclusively reported that YG would be debuting a new girl group in the 2nd half of 2021.[12] Later that same day, YG Entertainment confirmed the news.[13][14] In August 2021 several articles stated that YG Entertainment intends to introduce its new girl group in the fourth quarter of 2021.[15][16][17] However, no debut in 2021 came to fruition and by November and December of 2021, several articles stated that the group's debut would take place sometime in 2022.[18][19] Later that year a leak released by DC Insider revealed that BABYMONSTER would be debuting in the second half of 2022, sometime after August.[20]
2023 (1): Introduction, Last Evaluation, "Dream"[]
On December 30, 2022, YG Entertainment unveiled the poster titled "YG Next Movement" containing silhouettes of 7 girls, the poster set midnight on January 1, 2023 as the reveal day for something related to the group.[21][22][23][24]
On January 1, 2023, YG Entertainment released a trailer for the group's debut through their YouTube channel, in which it was confirmed that the group would be called "BABYMONSTER".[25] Later on the same day it was reported that YG plans to introduce BABYMONSTER members' skills and information sequentially through continuous promotions, starting with the first introduction video.[26]
On January 12, Rami was introduced through a live performance as the first member of BABYMONSTER[27], followed by Ahyeon on January 16.[28] On January 19, Asa, Rora & Ruka were all unveiled as members in a dance performance video.[29] On January 23, Chiquita was introduced through a live performance[30], followed by Asa on January 26[31], Rora on January 30[32], Pharita on February 2[33], and Ruka on February 6.[34]
On March 6, YG Entertainment released a teaser for Last Evaluation in which Yang Hyun Suk revealed that the group will not be debuting with seven members. Last Evaluation is a series that airs weekly and shows the seven girls' final monthly evaluations. It started on March 10, on the group's YouTube channel.[35] At the end of eighth episode, Yang Hyun Suk revealed that the group will have five members and the final lineup will be announced on May 12.[36] On May 12, it was announced that all seven members would be part of the final lineup.[37]
On May 13, it was announced that the group would release a pre-debut song titled "Dream" on May 14.[38]
2023 (2): Debut with "Batter Up"[]
On July 11, YG Entertainment announced that BABYMONSTER will be release a single in September,[39][40] but it was ultimately postponed for quality improvement.
On October 10, YG Entertainment announced they will release a debut single in November. The group started filming the music video in late October.[41] On November 9, a teaser was released, announcing they will release their debut digital single, "Batter Up", on November 27.[42] The music video for the song counted 22.59 million views on the first day breaking the record for most viewed music videos in the first 24 hours by a K-pop group in it's debut which was previously held by aespa with the song "Black Mamba".[43]
On November 15, it was announced that Ahyeon recently left the team due to health reasons. However, it was later confirmed by YG that she would remain a member of the group but will not participate in group activities due to health issues.[44]
2024: "Stuck In The Middle", Ahyeon's return, debut with BABYMONS7ER, "Forever", fandom name reveal, "Batter Up -JP Ver.", Drip[]
On January 1, 2024, YG Entertainment announced that BABYMONSTER will release their first english digital single "Stuck In The Middle" on February 1, and release a mini album on April 1.[45]
On January 25, YG Entertainment announced that Ahyeon would be rejoining BABYMONSTER due to improvements in her health and would be participating in the group's upcoming mini album in April. It was also announced that the group plans to release their first full-length album this fall.[46]
On February 27, the group released an announcement video for their debut mini album BABYMONS7ER, set for release on April 1.[47]
On May 20, YG Entertainment announced that the group will release a pre-release single in July before making their comeback with their first full-length album this coming fall.[48] On June 17, a teaser released across the group's social medias announced the digital single would be released on July 1.[49] The single's title was later revealed to be "Forever" on June 19.[50]
On July 27, 2024, the group announced their fandom name to be 'MONSTIEZ'.[51] The name combines the 'MONS' from 'BABYMONSTER' with the English word 'TIES', emphasizing the close relationship between BABYMONSTER and their fans.
On August 14, it was announced through BABYMONSTER's Japanese website that they will be releasing their first Japanese digital single, "Batter Up -JP Ver.", on August 16.[52]
On September 23, YG Entertainment confirmed reports that BABYMONSTER had completed the recording and filming stages for their first full-length album.[53] On October 8, it was announced that they would be releasing their first full-length album, Drip on November 1.[54]
