Antifragile (stylized in all-caps) is the second mini album by LE SSERAFIM. It was released on October 17, 2022 with "Antifragile" serving as the album's title track.
This album marks their first official comeback as five members following the departure of Kim Garam on July 20, 2022.[1][2][3]
The physical album is available in nine versions: Vol.1 Midnight Onyx, Vol.2 Iridescent Opal, Vol.3 Frozen Aquamarine, Weverse album, and five member-specific compact versions.
Background[]
On September 1, 2022, Source Music revealed to Newsen that LE SSERAFIM is preparing for their first-ever comeback and that more details of the schedule would be revealed later.[4] It was later on reported the group would be making their return in October and their first comeback without former member Garam.[5] On September 15, 2022, JTBC reported that the group would return on October 17, but Source Music and HYBE didn't confirm the information.[6]
On September 18, 2022, a teaser titled "Do You Think Im Fragile?" was revealed through HYBE Labels official YouTube channel.[7] Later on September 19, 2022, Source Music announced that the group would make a comeback on October 17 with their second mini album titled Antifragile.[8][9]
Composition[]
Source Music described Antifragile as an album that contains LE SSERAFIM's inner stories and attitudes as they become stronger once they face adversities.[10]
The title track "Antifragile" was described as an Afro-Latin-style pop genre song with a heavy Latin rhythm. Counting on a lively and addictive sound that comes from the repetition of the same lyrics. The song contains the message that difficult times are also a stimulus for growth and that through this you will become stronger.[11]
"The Hydra" was described as a song with bold rhythms and grooved bass lines that was used as background music for the previously released album trailer. Also the theme song of the original HYBE story Crimson Heart, "Impurities" is an R&B song that mixes hip-hop rhythms with sweet chord progression. 'No Celestial' is a pop punk song that shows a willingness to let go of grandiose modifiers like angels and goddesses and live like 'I am' while thanking fans for loving 'me as I am'. "Good Parts" (when the quality is bad, but I am) is a social media pop song with a minimalist arrangement. Through this song, LE SSERAFIM says that it is also courageous to accept the not-so-perfect look as part of yourself and not hide your disapproval.[12]
The members Sakura and Yunjin participated in the composition of the track "Good Parts (when the quality is bad but I am)", Yunjin also participated in the composition of the tracks "Impurities" and "No Celestial".[13]
Production[]
On September 23, 2022, it was announced that HYBE founder Bang Si Hyuk ("Hitman Bang") would once again be in charge of the executive production of the album repeating the successful collaboration as in the group's previous album Fearless and that NU KIM (Kim Sunghyun) would also return as creative director for the album.[14]
Promotions[]
To promote the album's release, the group held a showcase on the day of its release on October 17, 2022, the showcase was broadcasted simultaneously on cable TV channel Mnet and online through the YouTube channel M2.[15]
On October 19, Source Music announced that members Kim Chaewon and Huh Yunjin had gotten into a minor car accident earlier that day. They suffered mild muscle pain and bruises and they were advised by a doctor to rest for the time being. Thus, the group canceled all their promotions from October 20 to October 22.[16] On October 22, Source Music revealed that the group will be resuming their activities and will be performing on October 23 at Inkigayo.[17]
Commercial performance[]
On September 26, 2022, YG PLUS revealed that Antifragile had exceeded 400,000 pre-order sales in its first-week.[18] The album surpassed over 560,000 pre-orders as of October 7,[19] and 600,000 stock pre-orders as of October 15.[20]
On October 17, Hanteo Chart announced that Antifragile had recorded 408,833 copies sold in its first day, breaking the group's previous highest first day sales record.[21] In one week the album sold 567,673 copies which doubles their previous best.[22]
Circle Chart reported that Antifragile sold 580,995 copies during the week of October 16 - October 22. It also debuted at #2 on Circle's weekly album chart for week 43.[23]
Antifragile debuted at #14 on the Billboard 200 chart, making it LE SSERAFIM's first album to enter the chart. The album also debuted at #13 on the Billboard World Albums chart. "Antifragile" debuted at #42 on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart and #8 on the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart.[24] Antifragile spent two weeks on the Billboard 200 chart which makes LE SSERAFIM the fifth girl group to do so.[25]
On December 7, the album was certified Double Platinum by the KMCA for selling over 500,000 units on Circle Chart.[26] On January 12, 2023, it received a triple platinum certification for surpassing 750,000 copies sold on Circle Chart.[27]
On February 28, 2023, the Recording Industry Association of Japan reported that "Antifragile" received a gold certification after surpassing 50 million streams in Japan.[28] On June 27, 2023, "Antifragile" received a platinum certification for surpassing 100 million streams.[29]
On March 2, 2023, it was announced that "Antifragile" had surpassed over 1 million units on Circle Chart.[30]
