AlphaBAT (알파벳) is a three-member boy group under APB Entertainment.
Originally as a duo, they debuted on December 27, 2012 with the single album "Hello.". After joining Simtong Entertainment in 2013, they reformed as a nine-member group on November 12, 2013 with the digital single "AB City".[1]
History[]
2012: Debut as a duo with "Hello", Kyumin's departure[]
In 2012, AlphaBAT was formed as a hip-hop duo, consisting of Kyumin and Selin, under YUB Entertainment. They later made their debut on December 27, 2017 with the digital single "Hello.".
Sometime later, Kyumin left the duo, leaving Selin as a solo act. After becoming a solo act, Selin departed from the company which left the future of the AlphaBAT uncertain.
2013: Members introductions, "AB City", "Surprise Party"[]
In January 2013, the group's SNS were updated, revealing that they had signed with a new company, Simtong Entertainment and became a 9-member group, consisting of: Hayong, Junsu, Sanha, Sanghun, Selin, Suyeop, Seoljune, Yeonsu and Yeongjin. Former member Kyumin also signed with this company; however, he stated on his Facebook page that the company had different plans for him and that he would debut in a different group under the same company.[citation needed]
On October 21, 2013, Simtong Entertainment partnered with the brand Boys London. Alongside this partnership, they revealed the members' new stage names corresponding to the Greek alphabet: B:eta (Hayoung), C:ode (Sanghun), D:elta (Yeonsu), E:psilon (Yeongjin), F:ie (Sanha), G:amma (Junsu), H:eta (Seoljune), I:ota (Selin), and J:eta (Suyeop). Although the alphabet begins with "Alpha", they explained that "Alpha" was already represented in the group's name.[citation needed]
On November 12, 2013, they debuted as a 9-member group with the digital single, "AB City".
On December 18, 2013, they released a surprise digital single, "Surprise Party," as a christmas gift for fans. On the same day, they announced their fandom name, "Alpha", on their Daum Cafe.
2014-2015: "Always", Attention, Answer and hiatus[]
On February 12, 2014, they posted a new logo picture with the caption "Coming Soon #AlphaBAT_Attention", confirming that a comeback was ahead.[2] They later announced that it would be their first mini album, scheduled for release by the end of the month.
On February 19, 2014, they did another surprise release with their third digital single "Always".
On February 21, 2014, they began posting teasers for their previously announced comeback and indicated that it was set to be released on the 25th. On February 25, 2014, they made their first comeback with the release of their first mini album Attention.
In August 2014, they began releasing new concept photos, teasing an upcoming comeback. On August 22, 2014, they released their second mini album, Answer.
After completing the promotions for their last comeback, they spent the remaining year of 2015 on hiatus. During this time, some members, without any official announcement from the company, began their mandatory military enlistment.
2016-2017: Reorganization, label changes, "Get Your Luv"[]
On November 2, 2016, it was announced that AlphaBAT had been reorganized into a five-member group with B:eta, E:psilon, G:amma, H:eta, and new member, K:appa.[n 1] This also unofficially confirmed C:ode, D:elta, F:ie, I:ota, and J:eta's departure from the group.[3]
On May 23, 2017, AlphaBAT opened a new official Instagram account, indicating that they would soon be resuming group activities. They also appeared to have switched their label to AZ Entertainment and W Entertainment.[4]
On July 25, 2017, member H:eta announced his enlistment via his personal Instagram account and AlphaBAT was left with only four members.[citation needed] On the 28th of the same month, they released their second single album, "Get Your Luv".
2018-2020: Addition of L:ambda, "New World"[]
In early 2018, H:eta stopped updating his SNS and ceased communication with the group, suggesting that he quietly left the group during his enlistment.
On September 28, 2018, W Entertainment and AZ Entertainment confirmed the news of AlphaBAT's comeback with their newest member L:ambda.[5] Now as a five-member group once again, they made their comeback on October 8, 2018 with their third single album "New World".
2019: "Fly", "Again"[]
On April 29, 2019, through their Instagram page, AlphaBAT announced a new comeback. The following day, on April 30, 2019, they released their fourth digital single, "Fly."[6]
On August 26, 2019, member E:psilon announced that he would begin his mandatory military enlistment.[7]
On September 2, 2019, a music video for their previously released single "Fly" was released. Since it was recorded before E:psilon's enlistment, he still appeared in the MV.[8]
On November 6, 2019, AlphaBAT launched a Makestar project to fund their next single album. It was also noted that they had seemingly changed companies again, this time to APB Entertainment.[9] The following day, it was revealed that they had successfully reached their goal of ₩7,000,000.[10]
On February 11, 2020, AlphaBAT released their first special single, "Again".
2021-present: Lineup changes & hiatus[]
After releasing "Again", AlphaBAT continued doing online promotions until 2021. In July 2021, it was announced that members E:psilon and K:appa had departed from the group.[11]
Since December 2021, the group became inactive with little to no promotions and the members focused on their individual activities.
On November 14, 2024, B:eta and G:amma celebrated the group's 11th anniversary with an Instagram post thanking the fans.[12][13]
