Not to be confused with Instar.

4L (포엘), briefly known as Instar (인스타), was a three-member girl group under Jade Contents Media. Originally as four, they debuted on August 4, 2014 with the digital single "Move".

They quietly disbanded in June 2016, following Jayoung and J-Na's re-debut as a duo.

4L stands for "Four Ladies".[1]

History[]

Pre-debut[]

Before debuting as 4L, Chany (formerly known as Chanhee), J-Na (formerly known as Zebra), and Jayoung were members of the girl group MOA. They left the group in July 2014 due to negative public reception. Alongside Yeseul, a trainee from MOA’s label Professional Entertainment, they joined Jade Contents Media.

2014-2015: Debut with "Move", Yeseul's departure, Instar[]

On July 28, 2014, Jade Contents Media released the first teaser for 4L’s debut song, "Move".[2] The teaser drew attention for its lesbian-themed music video and suggestive choreography. An agency representative later stated it was "just the tip of the iceberg", promoting the group as "the girl group with the most exposure ever."[1][3]

Additional teasers followed on July 29 and July 31, building anticipation for their debut.[4][5]

On August 1, 4L officially debuted with the digital single "Move, which became the fourth most-viewed music video of August 2014.[6]

After October, the group’s activities slowed. By December, they performed without Yeseul, suggesting at her unofficial departure.[7]

On June 2, 2015, Yeseul confirmed in an interview with Star News that she had terminated her contract and left the group at the end of 2014, citing dissatisfaction with the concept. She debuted as a soloist with "Love at First Sight," on June 2, 2015.[8]

On December 15, J-Na, Jayoung, and former member Yeseul performed as a trio at Wanda Group Investment Conference, under the name Instar.[9] However, no further updates were given afterward.

2016: Disbandment[]

On June 16, 2016, after a year of inactivity, Jayoung announced on her Instagram that she and J-Na would re-debut as a trot duo under the name J-Young.[10] Afterward, 4L’s official website was deleted and the group was presumed disbanded.

Aftermath[]

Following the disbandment of 4L, the members went their separate ways:

  • J-Na and Jayoung re-debuted as members of the trot duo J-Young on July 13, 2016 with the digital single "I Don't Know". The duo presumably disbanded in 2018, following the expiration of the members' contracts.
  • Chany re-joined her former girl group RUBY and later re-debuted in Ureka on November 14, 2016.
  • Yeseul continued as a soloist, as well as a model.
